I made it to the regionals for the Olympics in high school but that was a billion years ago (I'll be 40 in a couple years.) If memory serves, they were way tougher than they are now...I remember walking on the asphalt along Venice Beach as a teen, I stepped on a burning cigarette and barely felt it, I remember jumping a bit and my girlfriend saying jokingly "Hop to it!"
These days, I can't even walk to the end of the driveway barefoot without feeling a little discomfort. I think pedicures and going barefoot ONLY when off work (I generally work 12 hours days~including commute~mostly in high heels and nylons) so getting out of them at the end of a long day is nice.
