excuse me for sounding a little naive but i've read the phrase
"using a safe word"
what is that? when is that used?

thanks

Basically the safe word is used when the ticklee is in some form of distress. It means for the tickler to stop immediately and make sure the "lee" isn't hurt (like rope burn or muscle cramp) or having difficulty breathing from laughing. This rule should never be violated.

To follow that, if your using a gag you can have your lee hold something heavy and they should drop it if they want you to stop 🙂

I use the "Balls of Freedom!" (two squidgy balls I got from a beer festival) they double up as something to squeeze to help with endurance 😀

A safeword is an agreed-upon distress signal. It might be a word that the 'lee wouldn't normally use that way (such as "Purple Alligator!" or "Red!"), or it might be a word that fits in context but by agreement is used only for this (such as "Mercy!").

In either case, the purpose is to give both partners an unambiguous signal that means "Stop! There's something seriously wrong!" Many 'lees beg, plead, and scream blue murder when they're being tickled, so it's valuable to have something that cuts through all of that and lets the 'ler know it's serious.

Safe words should only be used in an emergency and not abused or misused or over used. Crying wolf for no reason may get you tickled to death...LOL

To follow on what others have already stated, when used properly, a safeword can allow for a lee to do all that begging and screaming without the ler having to stop. When used, the safeword lets the ler know that you really are in trouble of some sort...physical distress, mental distress, etc....and not just pleading for mercy because you're so ticklish it's driving you nuts. It's great for those who want to test their limits. Beg and plead all you like. But, it won't stop until the safeword is used....or the ler gets tired, as has happened with me on more than one occassion. :woot:

Exactly... a safeword is something I use every chance I get because the sensation honestly drives me insane!!! :3poke: Maybe I should test my limits without a safeword one day... hmmmm:scared:

Pay no attention to the safeword myth; there was never such a thing. :bounce:

This thread should have been closed after Kereds post...now everyone is just repeating the same thing over and over again.

I think the definition of the safe word has been explained very adequatley by those responding to the thread. I wanted to add that the word should be simple to utter during an intense tickling situation. I prefer the word RED.
However another alernative to using the safe word is timed amounts. This way if the "lee' feels they might use the word prematurely, the tickling will continue until that time has been reached. Of course a safe word be used inconjuction with timed amounts if some other distress occurs. I distincly remember Charlee horse happening once, during a long bout of foot tickling and a prompt massage elleviated most of it

Our sincerest apologies, Tckleme. We had no idea that you have taken great offense to the shenanigans of dead-horse beating. On behalf of the other forum members, we once again beg for your forgiveness.

***insert the roll eyes out of the back of my fucking head emoticon here:

Also, it's often a single-worded way to tell the difference between a caring, sensual 'ler, and a single-minded, self-centered, jackass.

The problem is, if you only figure that part out AFTER you've been tied up and need to safeword, you shouldn't be doing private, one on one tickle sessions, IMHO.

I like the holding something and letting go idea...

I use a Red and yellow signal with the same meanings as a traffic signal.
STOP means stop now because something is VERY wrong.
Yellow, just means slow up a bit, I want to catch my breath but don't want the play to stop...I usually just move to another spot or reduce intensity.
I have had Yellow much more often than Red, infact I only remember one RED sign and that was because of a digging cuff...
