Female vocalists put me off. A suggested band will probably only get 20 seconds of my attention if their singer has tits. However for the last hour or two I've been paying attention to the ones I do rate. Courtney Love(Hole), Bonnie Tyler, Shirley Manson(Garbage),Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette.

So what about you lot?

A lot of female vocalists put me off. Quite a few have a great talent and tone to their voice, until they start that awful warbling and making silly singing noises instead of actually singing words. It just fills up the track with mindblowing numbness and I get bored. It does nothing for the song and the 'feeling' of the song has gone, well in my mind anyway.

I do love Tarja's voice, who was the vocalist from Nightwish. I also think that Dusty Springfield had a beautiful tone to her voice, soul, warmth and genuine feeling as does Doris Day (yep, there I said it haha) 😀 I get a feeling of honesty from their vocals.

Yes, female singers do tend towards being a bit shit.

Courtney Love(Hole)

Exhibit A

Bonnie Tyler, Shirley Manson(Garbage)

I rate these two.

Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette.

Who are these

The woman who sang that White Rabbit song from Fear & Loathing is good, as is Dusty Springfield. The biggest problem female vocalists have nowadays is that they tend to be in shitty power-rock bands and thus even though their voices are beautiful, the lyrics they're singing and the music accompanying them is a big pile of shite.

In my teens, I had a huge thing for Shirley Manson. Her voice is rather amazing, in my opinion. Not your typical bubble-gum, sweetie pie pop vocals... but rather a deep and sultry tone. I also love Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil, for what it's worth.

I know exactly what you mean; I don't think there's another isnger on earth that could do I'm Only Happy When It Rains. She's Scottish, so it's probably a lifetime of fried Mars bars and sheep's intestines that makes her voice sultry.

I also love Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil, for what it's worth.

I forgot about her, she's quite good too.

Also Annie Lennox <3 <3

That's weird... About half of what I listen to is sung by women.

Sarah McLachlan, Dido, and Tori Amos are some of my favorite singers.

For me, gender doesn't really matter in my music, but each gender does seem better at certain types of singing.

I always cringe when I hear a female singer start a song with "Heyyyyyaayyy", or, "Ooooooooo". Almost every singer today does this.

My two favorite female vocalists(which no one ever heard of):

Maddie Pryor, from Steeleye Span
Maggie Bell, from Stone the Crowes

Drew

It's a strange thing about music. I love women, but I don't really like their music at all. There are always exceptions though ...

Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders) is pretty rad (it doesn't hurt that the band rocks also)

Bonnie Raitt

Lucinda Williams

Rachel Yamagata

Alright so I like (in no particular order):

1. Amy Lee

2. June Carter

3. Tori Amos

4. Dido

5. Indina Menzel

6. Kristin Chenoweth

There are others of course, but I agree that a lot of today's songstress's are poppy uncultured vocalists. 🙁

Nightwish... I agree with you! So much power in her voice, warm falsetto (I find it quite thick though), but what is great is that aside from operatic metal style, she can make it have the classical appeal. These two levels make Tarja a great vocalist.

Look, people... friends, persons of esteem, I'm as open-minded as the next person when it comes to music, but Tori Amos was never good, is not good, and probably will never be good. Her music is bad and she should feel bad for it. Chrissy Hynde and Amy Lee are alright, Sarah McLachlan is awesome, as is Kirsty MacColl.

Thank you all who brought up Sarah McLachlan. Absolutely an amazing talent right there.

Joan Jett (squish!) - she can actually pull off hard rock as a chick. One of the very very few. Nevermind the fact that I have had a huge crush on her since I was a kid, lol.

Stevie Nicks

Bonnie Raitt

Darling Nikki from Lords of Acid, but that is just because she is such a naughty NAUGHTY girl.

The girl from Moldy Peaches. I like her, not so much because of some overwhelming talent, but because she is authentic and doesn't try to make her voice into something its not. She's quirky and has what it takes to pull it off.

Aretha Franklin anyone???

Oh and whoever said Annie Lennox - good call.

You LIKE Courtney Love?

......alrighty then.

I honestly don't mind female singers. Allow me to name some of my faves.

Janis Joplin
Joan Baez
Stevie Nicks
Amy Lee
Dido
Cher
Aretha Franklin
Sinead O'Connor

Ugh. I realize it's all subjective, but I have never liked anything that woman has come out with.

There's a dirty joke somewhere in there.

I like the chick from Paramore. And there's a song from the band Rise Against called Roadside. The girl guesting on the song sounds like what I'd imagine an angel sounds like. I melt into a puddle everytime I hear it.

Yep indeed :numberone:

I also quite like Sam Brown's voice, the daughter of Joe Brown. She has a lovely deep smooth voice, she usually is on Jools Holland's show.

Tina Turner can belt out a track or two, not the typical fantastic voice but she sure has passion and delivery.

I forgot about her Slap'n'Ticklee, but you are absolutely right, she's great.

I looked for a video on youtube (couldn't find it), but on the Concert for George Harrison DVD she sings Horse to the Water (written by Harrison and Jools Holland) with Holland on the Piano and Jim Capaldi (Traffic) on the drums. A complete face melter and I highly recommend it (the whole DVD).

By the way Later With Jools Holland is a completely kick ass show. Always a nice eclectic mix of music. I have a great DVD dedicated to Britpop acts who appeared on the show. Awesome.

:goodjob:

You're welcome, Perduabo! I just couldn't let another day go by without mentioning Ann Wilson and her spectacular voice.

Yeah, Ann Wilson is awesome! And Hearts 2002 live dvd is even better cause she's barefoot for the whole show.

Oh, and Pink is great, too. One of the few recent female singers I really like.

Drew

Now that I'm putting a little thought into it, I realise that I like a lot more female vocalists than I realised.

Dolores O'Riordan Anyone?
