I don't doubt your statistic about half the world having seen a Bond film. But he is not the most filmed fictional character of all time. Can you guess who is?

Sorry, no. (Besides, Santa isn't fictional! He brings me stuff every year.)

Not Mickey, not Frankenstein. According to the statistics I've seen, Dracula is in second place with over a hundred films. The top character has about twice that number.

The more I think about Mickey, though, the more I wonder. If you count shorts made about characters created for film in the first place, there might be several like Mickey and Bugs with numbers in the high hundreds. Let's say in this quiz we're talking about live-action films and a character who originated in literature.

Good guesses, but no. However, you're in the right part of the world. (By the way, I'm soon to appear as Scrooge in our civic theater's production of A Christmas Carol.)

Nope. (Hint: When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.)

Oh, now you're just being a little scamp. (Gently tweaks her cheek.) Really, my dear, the answer is quite elementary.

Sherlock Holmes
Give the man a cigar! Or, rather, a well-filled calabash pipe. Yes, Holmes probably had James Bond's present film total beaten even before the end of the silent era.
