Wasn’t sure whether to post this here or in general discussion, but as it’s a word that turns up a lot in this part of the forum, I thought I’d take a chance.

I was wondering if anybody else was of the opinion that vanilla is kind of an odd word to use to denote the mainstream, the conventional, the non-fetishistic?

Also, there seems, to my ears, to be just a hint of the pejorative about the term. (“Oh, you like ‘normal’ stuff, eh? Well you know what that makes you, don’t you!”) lol

Of course, I’m not saying people SHOULDN’T use it, I just don’t really see why such a word is needed. (The main reason I incorporated it into my (admittedly) stupid username was to sort of take the piss out of it.)

Cheeyers everyone!

Hell yes! I mean I get it, Vanilla is classically seen as "standard" in terms of flavoring, which means it's a make sense work to describe someone not into all things kinky but..... at the same time I LOVE vanilla flavor, it's one of my favorites and I find it far from standard 😀

I think to be honest, it's just a nice easy and useful way of getting that piece of information across. For example, you get invited to some sort of kink related meet up and you ask what sort of clothing to wear. You might get told "Well it's in a pub so Vanilla is the way to go" It just saves people going into unnecessary detail. Interesting word choice, but a well known useful term.

An odd word? How so? I don't think it's the mainstream, I think it's just not having any special needs. A vanilla doesn't understand that whatever the fetish is makes the afflicted person feel more connected. To them it's just "this person is nuts" with whatever philia. My gf knows I like tickling but also can't really handle it "I'm smiling/laughing too much, my face can't handle it".

So vanilla is someone who doesn't understand or want to understand. Generally. The girls in a number of "first time" videos. They should be called "only time" because it's a visit to the zoo for a lot of them.

Yes, vanilla is pejorative. It connotes "plain, ordinary, and dull."

(In fact, French Vanilla ice cream can be a wonderful interesting flavor, but the stereotype is still plain, ordinary, and dull.)

Definitely. They can be interesting but in the sense that for them tickling would equal "holy shit! People get off to this??"

I used to be pretty daring with tickling lol. Going on dates and pretending I was just touching girls (like a hug) to see if they had spots.

I like vanilla ice cream. It's delicious and I have it often.

Sometimes however, I like to have double belgian chocolate ice cream with raspberries and chocolate sauce swirls in it, and at those moments I've been guilty of thinking, "Jeez I'm glad I'm not having vanilla".

Doesn't mean I've got something against vanilla ice cream 😛

Yea I like giving raspberries and going "thank god she doesn't just want to kiss". 😉

I know that it is used as pejorative. But I personally don't see it that way. I think the term is useful.

I'm probably a swirl. I do the foot thing and tickling thing as part of my personal sex life. But I've never considered a fetish lifestyle...no nests or munches or fetlife...I'm only on the perimeter of fetish communities. Which means to me...that I am pretty vanilla...with a touch of some flavors.

But vanilla...to the extent that it even applies to me...doesn't offend me at all. I think I understand. So I think it is descriptive. If a fetlife person considers me to be vanilla...I'd just shrug my shoulders. Pejorative as it may be...it works. It applies. LOL. And I am secure in my vanilla identity.

Idk if you have to be "well known" in a fetish community to be "not vanilla".

I'm not vanilla in that any girl I've been with can verify I can make them laugh their asses off with fingers and no bondage at all lol.

But yea I just don't have prime location to "meet my breed".

Yeah, I can understand the need for a short-hand sort of word. It just doesn't seem terribly apposite to me.

For example, you get invited to some sort of kink related meet up and you ask what sort of clothing to wear. You might get told "Well it's in a pub so Vanilla is the way to go"

I wasn't even aware 'vanilla' could be used in such a context! If somebody told me to "dress vanilla", I'd probably think: 'Right. Just white/cream-coloured things then.' People'd be going, "Hey, who's the cricketer?" 😀

(In fact, French Vanilla ice cream can be a wonderful interesting flavor, but the stereotype is still plain, ordinary, and dull.)

('French Vanilla' = same as above, but with additional beret)

I don't think going to fetish gatherings is the marker for having a fetish. I have a super-strong fetish and I'd never do that stuff.

The word is needed because we need a way to describe people who aren't into anything kinky. I guess we could call them "normals." 🙂

Well, if one is going to complain about these things, one may as well try to come up with an alternative.

You know when you go to a festival, a music festival, say... You've got the people who go straight to the main stage, because they want to see the stuff that EVERYBODY (or almost everybody, anyway) likes... And then you've got the people who go to the side stage, for something a little more, mm, 'niche', shall we say?

So us fetishists, be we 'performers' or 'spectators' are side stage; the non-fetishists are main stage. Now, what's happening at the main stage isn't necessarily more important than what's happening at the side stage - nor is it, to look at it from another angle, any less interesting, per se. Just happens to have a greater mass appeal is all.

Example: "Yeah, my boyfriend's not really into anything kinky. He's a main stager." lol

What do we think? Yes? No?

I might just use it anyway - as an act of revenge on the "vanilla" users! 😛

Yea but that still suggests we can't achieve normality. We still (most, anyhow) end their session with their SO by doing the traditional "finish", just we need something to rev us up more.

I think it's odd that a vanilla can get hard just thinking about a pussy, actually. I would think actual doing something would prompt more of a response. But then again, I just tickle...
