Not a problem. 'Tis painfull to be surrounded by media and unable to view it.
Alrighty, we have a few options. First, uninstall Realplayer. It is unnecessary. Other free, non-intrusive programs can do the same things it can without the hassle.
Second, lets choose a player for you.
Media Player Classic (
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Media_Player_Classic.htm) is essentially a clone of Realplayer stripped down to do only the essential task of playing files. It alone may be able to play everything you can't now. However, if while installing it offers the option to install any codecs (How clips are decoded) for Windows Media,
SAY NO OR UNCHECK THAT. If other Windows codecs are installed, Windows Media Player often crashes from there on out. Just pay attention when you install that you don't have anything checked that says Windows Media or similar.
Another option is the
K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack.htm). This monster can play just about anything, from major file formats to ones you have never heard of and will never have to play. However, I don't recommend that you try this unless Media Player Classic does not work as it is much more complicated. If you do choose to or need to install this, follow these steps:
- After saving the installer, open it.
- Go through the screens until you reach one labled "Select Components."
- In the Drop-down box, select "Profile 5: Lots of Stuff"
- Scroll down in the box below the drop-down box and
uncheck "Windows Media 9 VCM." If you do not do this then WIndows Media pLayer
WILL suffer serious problems.
- Continue until you reach "Select Additional Tasks"
- On this screen, make sure "Windows Media (.wmv)" is deselected (It should already be).
- Finish installing and you're done!
Let me know if you have further questions.
