Alabama Hostage Situation

This story has begun to hit national airwaves.

A deranged man boarded a school bus, killed the driver, and kidnapped a 5 year old boy. He is now holding that boy in his underground bunker where the cops are attempting to negotiate with him.

Here is the thing...the man (Jimmy Lee Dykes) is very Anti-Government and does not recognize the authority. He is also a Doomsday Prepper. That means that the bunker is well supplied at the very least. It is likely bomb proof obviously. I wouldn't rule out air filtration systems, extensive ventilation, and generators.

This is a very serious situation here, and it doesn't look like it will end anytime soon.

We are now over 48 hours into the hostage situation with absolutely no new information. It is a complete stalemate out there.

I heard about this yesterday.

From what I heard, (and this could be wrong) this guy was also supposed to go to court about shooting at his neighbors, but couldn't make it because he was too busy killing bus drivers.

He was due in court on charges of menacing. He didn't actually shoot anyone.

Well, given his current circumstance, I'm not even sure that makes a difference anymore. Clearly he's moved past menacing.

If he's a good suvivalist, he has years worth of food and water, not to mention ammo and guns. If he's a rich survivalist he'll have all that, plus equipment to grow his own food.

I'm thankful for those authorities who kept their patience when most would've snapped. I'm thankful to Dykes for not killing or harming the boy. He paid the debt for his crimes and I will not hate him. I pity him.

Ethan is one brave kid. I do admire that.

This is good news. Glad to hear that the kid made it out okay.

That must have been one hell of an experience for him. I don't know how I'd handle being trapped in a bunker with a psychologically deranged lunatic for that long.

I hope this will open the eyes about mental illness and how serious it is. Dykes suffered from it, and his hostage Ethan suffers from it. It is a real issue that we should look into...instead of shunning these people...we should help them.

It's unlikely that this will change much.

Someone that's already that fargone has very little chance of ever being reintegrated into society. I think he'd likely shoot someone prior to allowing them to get close enough to help. And as anti-government as he was, he'd likely sooner have gone down fighting than accept getting shoved off into a mental institution.

We have to find people like Dykes earlier in their life. Closer to childhood. Otherwise they'll just go off the deep end, and you simply can't get them back after that.

I thought that this situation would drag on for a week or so. I'm glad it is over.
