Just regular pencils. I don't like markers cause you can't control the color value enough. Don't waist your money on anything BUT prisma colors drac, it'll look horrible. Prismas are the only colored pencils worth messing with. (I sound like a commertial here 😀 )

Well, it all depends on technique and skill level. I've seen some people do some really amazing things with really cheap colored pencils that aren't even name brand.

Were these pencils expensive or are they those types you can get anywhere? What type of a set did you buy (how many colors) and how much did it cost?

Well, good technique can only compensate so much for poor tools. Sure, cheaper brands will probably work, but I've found them considerably harder to work with and still get a smooth, well blended finished product. I guess it all depends upon your own experiances though. Yeah, they are a little pricey. Since they are the colored pencils that all the college art classes insist upon, they will run you $15 to $20 for a set of 12. The larger sets start at about $25 and go up from there. Individual pencils will cost you around $1.25 a piece.

Alternately larger art supply places will sell pencils individually. It costs more per color but you don't end up with colors you may not need.
I have to say though that there's nothing more annoying than cheap crayons or colored pencils. They just feel wrong.

Oh yeah, I know its better to go with better quality. I was just making conversation.

And I already knew they are pretty pricey. The one thing that keeps me from using these pencils are that they are gone so fast, especially the colors you need like skin colors. Depending on how hard you press down and how you sharpen them you may only get a very limited use out of them. I'd be irritated at the idea that I might use up almost entire pencils on a single picture. I'm guessing this is why most people go digital. But its just not the same.
