"Althea Gibson was a pioneer who left an indelible mark on sports as she broke tennis' color barrier in the 1950s and helped pave the way for future generations of black and female athletes. She died Sunday at the age of 76."

It's a sad thing when a great athlete passes, and a little more bitter when it was one who was maybe a little more remarkable than most in his/her actions. She gained fame long before I was born and knew little about her, but still, she was one of the admireable ones.

Gibson paved way for the likes of Arthur Ashe and, most recently, Venus and Serena Williams. She broke through the race barriers of tennis by winning 5 Grand Slams in her career. A legend.

Althea Gibson will be missed! Forevered remember as one of tennis's legends.
