This is a true story, but it is funny (I think), so I have posted it here in the humor forum.
First some background on the characters.
I have a grandnephew, whom I will call Ben, which is not his real name. He was 9 years old when this conversation took place, in 2014.
Ben and I were watching a baseball game on ESPN in the home of his parents in Chicago.
Other characters in the room, also with their names changed, are:
Steve, Ben's father, who is married to my niece.
Alice, Ben's great aunt, who is my brother's wife's sister.
The story:
The Dodgers' manager, Don Mattingly, did something stupid.
Me: Use a pinch runner! For God's sake, use a pinch runner! Mattingly, you're a ... [pause realizing that Ben is in the room] ... person of illegitimate birth who commits the same sin as Oedipus the King!
Alice: What does that mean?
Steve: My wife told him never to curse when Ben is in the room.
Alice: But what does it mean?
Ben, age 9, in a bored tone of voice, while shaking his head sadly at his great aunt's ignorance of Greek mythology: It means that Uncle Lenny just called Mattingly a bastard motherfucker.
