I don’t think of myself as a jealous guy. Over the years, plenty of guys have flirted with my wife, and I never felt jealous, except once. I’ve mentioned Elisa before; she’s my wife’s cousin, and I used to date her. She eventually met the love of her life and married him. Her husband, Alex, is a really likable guy. He’s playful, outgoing, and always hugging people or joking around. I never felt threatened by him, but I can’t say I was a big fan either.
At the time, I was newly married to Amanda, and Elisa and Alex had been dating for a few months. Sometimes, the four of us would go to parties with mutual friends. By then, Alex and Amanda were comfortable enough to hug, and it never bothered me when he hugged her.
One time, at a party, Amanda and I arrived first and had been there for about an hour. I was talking to the host when Elisa and Alex showed up. Amanda was near the entrance, so she went over to greet them. I saw them and started walking over too. Amanda hugged Elisa first, then turned to Alex. He’s tall, so he leaned down to hug her. Everything seemed normal, but maybe he squeezed her side a little too hard; I'm not sure if it was on purpose. She jumped back with a snort. I swear, Elisa immediately realized what was about to happen and looked around to see if I was watching. I was.
I didn’t hear what Alex said, but I’m pretty sure it was something like, "Oh, are you ticklish?" I could see it on his face; he was about to have a little fun. He reached out with his hands shaped like claws, and Amanda stepped back twice but couldn’t get away in time. He tickled her waist, and she laughed even louder, trying to push his hands away and turn, but he tickled her again. She kept laughing and almost fell over.
Elisa came closer, but instead of joining in, she pulled Alex back and scolded him. Elisa could have teased me about it, but she didn’t. I’m not sure if she realized I was about to get angry or if she was jealous herself. All of this happened in just a few seconds, but my mind was spinning. Part of me was turned on seeing Amanda laugh like that, but another part was bothered because she never laughed that hard when I tickled her that way. Was I just a bad tickler? Did she enjoy it more because it was Alex? Was it just the surprise, or was she nervous because I was watching?
I went over to help Amanda up. She saw my face and knew I was annoyed. I’m pretty sure Amanda talked to Elisa about it later, and there must have been a conversation I never heard about, because Alex never hugged Amanda again.
When Amanda and I talked about it later, I said, “You laughed out loud, too loud.” She knew I was kind of annoyed. I joked that it would have been amazing if Elisa had joined Alex in tickling her. Amanda just laughed, hit me, and said, "You wish."
Honestly, in my head canon, in a parallel universe, that’s what happened, and I would have loved to see it.
