Tribute to Jörgen Jönsson
Ok, this post is in recognition of a true legend who has decided to retire now that the 2008/2009 SEL season is over. I will keep it short just so people can be arsed to read it...
Let's all give a big round of applause to Jörgen Jönsson, who has been forced to retire because of a back injury at the age of 36. He was a skilled two-way center with terrific leadership skills. He could have had a pretty decent NHL career, but he chose his team at heart in the SEL over the millions of dollars he could have earned in North America. He never turned down the national team eather, which he captained in pretty much every game where Mats Sundin was not available.
He has played more National Team games than any other Swede: 285
On top of that I believe he is the #2 top scorer in the SEL of all time.
He has won two Olympic Gold Medals, two World Championship Gold Medals, three WC Silver Medals, four WC Bronze Medals, and he has won the SEL five times.
He is the only Swede ever to have won the Olympics, the World Championship and the SEL all in one year (2006), and I am pleased to say that he ended his career as a winner; he helped his SEL team to the title this season.
He is probably not very well known in North America, since he only played one season in the NHL, but he will go down as a legend in the history books over here. Truly, he is one of the greatest Swedish hockey players to have ever laced 'em up!
