I'm looking at procuring a Utilikilt in the not too distant future. Are there any kilt-fanciers on the forum, male or female? We should form a clan. 😉

No, You can get a Utilikilt in just about any fabric you want, but they won't do it in plaid. But I think that's enough to identify a clan right there, no?

Oh Lordy!!!!........

........you all need to keep well clear of the "sweaty socks". We built a wall to keep them out you know.

Fat lot of good that did us, we are ruled by Jocks now!

You might want to PM DVNC. I know I've seen him in one, back when he worked renfairs and such. Dunno if he has the info you need, but couldn't hurt I suppose.

Kilts are the shit. If I can find the pic of me wearing mine and playing the Irish pipes (also known as Uililean pipes) I will post it on here. It was taken a few years ago when I was heavier and had a huge Rabbi beard, but it's still me.

I own two UtiliKilts; a navy Mocker that I can wear when I teach, and a khaki Workman's that I wear in the field. Love 'em both. I'm also looking online to get an actual Scottish kilt and the rest in my clan tartan, MacClennan.

For those on this thread not familiar with Utilikilts, they purposefully do not do authentic tartans; they have a very select policy on fabric, design, etc. Only American-made fabrics, nothing that actually duplicates the look of the traditional Scottish dress. They respect it, but don't want to give offense by copying any particular clan.

A slight exaggeration there my friend. :jester:

Kilts are ace, but i wouldn't go about wearing one as an everyday thing, best kept for special occasions in my opinion..

I've toyed with the notion of getting a kilt for literally decades now, and the few times I've actively looked into getting an authentic one, I found out how dismayingly cost-prohibitive they are. Yikes! Pretty spendy! Add to that the fact that I'd want my actual clan tartan on it, I'd have to research that, and triple check the results. But yeah, I could totally make a kilt work. 😀

So what the blazes it a Utilikilt? Is that what the Celtic Batman wears? :jester: No, wait, that'd be a Utilisporran.

I never felt a desire to own or wear a kilt. They always seemed a little "drag" to me.

They're non-traditional kilts with many different styles and features.

I find it kind of strange and sad that American mainstream culture doesn't really let men enjoy the unconstrained comfort of non-legged clothing, given the anatomical differences between men and women.

I own a couple of Utilikilts, and I would love to wear them more often, but my wife won't let me wear them out with her. Sometimes I wear them to work though. They are very comfortable and stylish.

I've yet to ever see a man wearing a skirt (read kilt) in public outside of a burlesque play. They may be comfortable, but I don't believe they can realistically be described as stylish. Most people aren't ready for such a radical change in culture. I like to think of it as the "drag coefficient." :blaugh:

Oh HELL yeah. That's frickin' rugged. I could totally pull that off.

I had one specially made in Edimburgh, you are talking about Scottish Kilts are you?, the full set with everthing, I love it. Is the Lamont tartan. Is perfect.

Use it to go to marriages of my friends.

what is a utilikilt?

also i think a man with nice muscular legs looks very sexy in a kilt..just my opinion of course...and it makes him look more masculine i think..

I, like Izzy, am part Scottish (with Stewart blood running through my veins).
My mother has many kilts which she has worn to special events over the
years, with thistle pins, etc. I love them. I lent them to the camera crew
one year, when I worked at a public tv station, and we were doing our
annual auction. It was a blast - so many comments! I unfortunately do
not own one, but I've considered it every time I've visited London, and
stopped in the fabric shop near the natural history museum.

I also love the utilikilt. Not on everyone, though. While I appreciate a nice
kilt or utilikilt on someone, some folks definitely look better in them.

I actually have seen construction workers wearing the utilikilt, and others
as well, but they have not nearly reached a saturation point!

Having been born in Scotland, I of course have several in my wardrobe.

Perhaps if the proper incentive were to be offered....maybe a ....picture of Dave in a kilt could...ummm.....show up someday....

Sorry, Dan. Guess I'm not gonna be the poster child for metro-sexuality. But perhaps you're right. I'll leave this thread alone and just "skirt" the issue. Otherwise it might "drag" on for weeks. :blaugh:

*GROAN!* Booooooo! Hiss! :blaugh:

Drew just needs to get out more. I've seen several utilikilts in public over the years. In fact a close friend of mine owns a Traditional model in hunter-orange camoflage fabric (the UK folks are very obliging in special fabric requests), and he wears it a couple of times a month.

Izzy, check the link I posted to Danimal. That'll tell you all about Utilikilts.

Edit: Deadsea, it's not a tartan. Plaid is just about the only fabric they WON'T use, even by request.

Edit2: I'm attaching a few of my favorite Utilikilts shots, from their website, for those who wonder what these things look like (and whether they're ever worn in public).

OH, I see Redmage, those things utilikilts are new for me.
I only used to know about the Scottish ones.

Let me tell ya, as someone who semi-frequents the local goth bar and other events where you'll see many Utilikilts over the last few years: NO ONE who's seen the big, brawny, muscles-on-their-muscles, drop dead gorgeous guys in the tight black t-shirts and kilts with the boots and those *thick* calves questions their masculinity. It would never occur to you. Maybe it's the beautiful girls that surround them, maybe it's because they always look like they could crush you with a thought...whatever it is it works (sigh) :cool2:

Bella, kilt fancier indeed
