Anyone ever been in the stocks for prolonged period?

Hey guys,

Has anyone ever been in the stocks for say an hour or more? The reason I'm asking is because I plan to build a set of stocks sometime soon and I want the person(s) I lock in there to be relatively comfortable. So can anyone with any experience with stocks tell me how to make them with the lees' comfort in mind?

I guess it depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you're using the stocks as a prop in a scene, I'd say add cushioning so that the ankle is snug in the device, as I'd guess the cause of most of the discomfort would be from rattling around in the hole and bruising the ankle (note: this is simply from intuition, I haven't messed with it myself).

If, on the other hand, you're simply looking to hold someone's feet immobile, I'd say stocks aren't really the best option, especially with comfort in mind. The easiest way would be to buy a pair of comfortable leather cuffs and some rope to attach them to somewhere.

For comfort in stocks here are a couple of ideas.

1.) Pipe Insulation. It's flexible and will wrap around the edge of the wood in the ankle holes.

2.) Fake Fur - I once took some cuffs off an old coat and used that as trim for the ankle holes. I trimmed down the fur a bit but it worked great.

3.) Cushioning with Leather or vinyl over it. This works as well as long as you attach the leather or vinyl far enough away from the hole and that the cushioning is flexible enough to work for different ankle sizes.

We have stocks, my Master had them custom made to his specs especially for me. The foot stocks are part of a padded bench which has a backrest. The place where my ankles rest in the stocks is very well padded and of cause the top part of the stocks closes over my ankles, that top part is also padded I sit on the bench with my ankles locked in the stocks, my back is against the backrest, my arms are restrained above my head and my knees also get strapped down. He has tortured me for long periods in those stocks, but after a while he lowers my arms and they get restrained to my sides. Mostly its my arms that suffer a bit of blood loss. Otherwise it all goes rather well and I stay pretty comfortable.
