you could call the airlines and ask them if they aren't allowing certain things onto the plane.
So far this year, I've flown from DC to Dallas TX; Ascuncion, Paraguay; and most recently to San Francisco, CA. Each time I brought my laptop on board the plane, coming and going. In fact, if you're bringing a laptop, definitely bring it with you on the plane as carry-on. Don't even think about checking it. Luggage storage compartments are subject to temperature extremes and the luggage handlers aren't known to be the gentlest guys on the planet.

I just flew last week!
I flew from Grand Rapids, MI to Detroit, MI to Dullas in Washington D.C. and then back out of Ronald Reagan in Arlington,VA to Detroit again and back to Grand Rapids last week for a job interview.
You can still bring your laptop on the plane with you.
I didn't have much in the way of problems really. Everything was basically as it was before just had to make sure to have all liquids in my checked luggage. I had some lipgloss in my purse I'd forgotton about and that had to be thrown out prior to me boarding.
On the way back I was randomly chosen AFTER security but prior to boarding at Reagan to have my carryon checked by security. He wasn't really that thorough though... just pawed through my undies (fun fun) and other clothing items, food and a book and sent me on my way.
But it DID strike me as kind of odd that after passing through security you can't stop at the local Starbucks or Caribou in the airport and buy something to bring on the flight. There are postings up everywhere for that.
And another funny note... I always wear flip flops at the airport... hard to hide something in them! And still I had to remove my sweatshirt and flip flops when going through security.
Security and all seemed to take about the same amount of time as it did when I've flown previously.

Just have a shave first.
I had to go to a few places recently in Australia and the security has been over board; my waist bag had been flipped inside out, shaken, bomb tested, my phone had been taken apart, the battery checked.
But thats been in Australia, I say call the airline to make sure.

From what I know, you're allowed to bring anything on the plane, minus the obvious and also no liquids. So if your carry-on has any kind of liquids (i.e. mouth wash, etc.), you will have to check it. Apparently, someone brought liquid explosives onto a plane recently. Someone always has to ruin the fun for everyone. But, as far as I know, the only change is liquids. I would also assume you wouldn't be able to bring any types of drinks as well.
