Anyone literally create or participate in an experiment?

I'm sure there are similar threads (know I've read of this sort of thing somewhere) but here goes... :smilestar

Entered college a Psych major... scary, yes...and the straw which finally sent me running to the Eng. Lit. Dept. (Sanctuary!) was the mandatory registration for 3 experiments per semester, to assist advanced students.

(Well, actually Behavioral Psych & lab experiments with adorable tiny mice didn't help, though at least I wasn't asked to zap them... GEE, I wonder what they'll do under THOSE circumstances... Sorry, Tangent...)

So freshmeat--I mean, freshmen-- psych students were offered up as convenient Guinea Pigs to upperclassmen (and women 🙂 ) in desperate need of data. (So we were taught to have all the more empathy for those mice...)

Which was fine, the cycle worked nicely to provide said data for advanced students, who had had to do the same when they were bottom rung -- but you were only allowed to refuse 3 experiments --- Once you hit that limit you were then *REQUIRED* to take WHATEVER you inadvertantly signed up for

**(we'd only find out what the experiment was about AFTER we'd sign up for it, and were sworn to secrecy on pain of [something drastic enough, had to sign a document of confidentiality]
---whether or not we'd agree to participate after discovery of the topic, to keep the rest of the freshmeat pool unaware & objective...) We were only given the most basic information initially, such as the topic; only those participating got the details....

Some experimentors would ask for certain ages, genders, even ethnic backgrounds, but most experiments were open to all... and you'd select initially from those you could.
.....Once you refused a third time, of course, you had to take whatever was left... and if you waited too long, hope you were able to attend the minimum of three, that you'd be eligible & they'd fit your class schedule...and not be filled up....

Most weren't bad at all... But I was VERY glad I hadn't refused any by the time I reached my third & last experiment that semester.

Almost fell through the floor when the student in charge interviewed me for the experiment (cute pleasant guy to boot, which of course made it so much worse) ...and he informed me very casually that it involved tickling.

Am reasonably sure I (may have blanched and) kept a straight face while somehow politely (& half reluctantly) refusing that older student who I suspected was "one of us" and therefore more dangerous/likely to see through another... all the while thinking I'd better make this exit quick before he does exactly that...
(Felt like this secret fetish was written in bold red across my forehead..."Fascinated but can't admit it...")

Mostly I felt sorry for those who couldn't refuse... (I was 17 or 18 then, still am not comfortable publicly for certain, into my 30's...) and simultaneously of course had been wishing I wasn't so blasted mortified, as would've loved to have found out if that was *literally done,
or if the point of the experiment was to see who'd refuse if possible? ---

OR if they'd just incorporated the suggestion of it, teasing & perhaps not actually touching anyone...?"

Of course, if anyone reading this account happens to recognize it --- Did you people actually... do any of the above??
(Okay, yeah, so the point of this thread may be in part to put this minor mystery to rest... 🙄 Which is why you do NOT get either the school or the exact year.... 😀 ) But I'm also curious to see if anyone else had a similar experience...

I'm sure they had to be careful so no charges of improper behavior (much less assault) could be brought against them (and most likely even someone with no Refusals left them could argue that THAT supposedly tactile experiment was not something to be coerced into, but I didn't hear about anyone having a problem. However, I also didn't hear any laughter... :idunno: Not that I stuck around either...)

So I got away -- Did anyone else? :happyfloa

Hmmm...

Thanks for posting that. You write extremely well and I enjoyed your post.

When I was in college, I used the "reflexology class project" to score opportunities to massage and tickle the feet of more than a few cute college girls, and it worked very well. That may not be the kind of thing you were thinking of, but I thought I'd share.

Well, I am a psychology major, and a psychology graduate student... and I don't have an answer for you. Really, I'm not sure what to say, except that I have no idea what that experiment was actually about, and that you can always refuse to participate in an experiment once they tell you what it involves. Informed consent rules in university research settings are very stringent nowadays, and participants are pretty much always told that they can choose to stop participating at any time. They may not get credit for it, but nor can they be coerced into participating. Just thought I'd mention that before anyone goes off about psychology researchers abusing students. 😛

I have participated in a couple different experiments, both medical and psychological. It didn't bother me too much.

I did learn to be careful though. One of the psychological experiments a practicing counselor was testing on a reaction to a therapy, I didn't have a pleasant reaction, nor the reaction she wanted. My reaction gave me a sharp temper, for the first time, that didn't go away for about 4-5 yrs. It took me that long to fix what she had broken, and lots of time from a few dedicated friends that helped me through it.

I still have a temper with certain things, I couldn't fix everything. But it is so rare for me to lose my temper again, that I am satisfied with where I am at for the most part.

So, while I enjoyed some of the experiments, and while almost every one was fun and didn't do any harm, there is always the possibility of that one experiment that could be damaging. I am still willing to participate to a certain degree, but I am far far more picky on what i choose.

When I was a high school senior I came up with a bogus experiment to see if a lady was righty or lefty. I would tickle each foot and told them that the most ticklish one was thier less dominate side. It worked splendidly. I tickled Aunt's, cousins, cousins wives, and strangers and always said I really couldn't tell, so I had to keep tickling.

Hey, thanks for sharing

Reflexology: You're welcome, thanks much for your kind (and detailed 🙂 response!!
Yes, your experience was certainly closely related 😀 And I can see how, in your situation, you'd get away with it too of course 🙂 Though I'd imagine your "subjects" probably left you delighted & relaxed!!
Someone told me reflexologists focus upon/can possibly heal or improve any part of the body via manipulation/massage of the feet
(talking through my hat here, as if I have any knowledge of your subject area.... 🙄 )

Lindyhopper: Thanks for the perspective, appreciate it from someone who carried on!!
As I mentioned above, I assumed the experimentors were careful & considerate enough (to avoid any unpleasantness...) and I never heard any negative feedback regarding (any) experiments, so most likely the same policy of continuously "informed consent" was in place (way back then... 🙄 ) and would've been offered to me had I accepted participation in that (questionable? kidding) experiment... which may not have involved any physical interaction anyway.... :idunno:

I was admittedly a bit melodramatic  but (the above) is what I remember distinctly -- No intent to give college psych departments a bad rap generally... I was actually half-joking; I left for the Eng. Dept. more because it felt like I'd simply come home... More than enough creative psychology in literature...

Any and all feedback is useful, even if you weren't involved in any such (tickling) experiment -- Thanks for the damage control 🙂

4Pawz: I'm VERY sorry you had such a bad experience, though it's quite generous of you to share it here so others will know to be more careful.... :bunny:
Especially with medical experiments, as you say, since I guess even if the practitioner is competent and caring (as I hope yours was...) there's so much less control when something's largely new & unknown...
I also learned not to take any doctor's word blindly, especially now when it seems insurance companies dictate medical procedure, though mine only resulted in a minor hernia.... :disgust:
Am very glad your situation was almost completely temporary & fixable overall 😱

Raider: That was also ingenious and you would've done really well (if you haven't already) in any psych department I'm sure!! :happyfloa

I married at a young age after having absolutely no experience in the kitchen beyond making PB & J sandwiches... everything I cooked for my new hubby was an experiment... does that count?

(that's about where I am now cuisine-wise...)
