Are your pets better than a hamster?

My 8 year old daughter's hamster just died a couple of days ago. It was her first personal experience with death. Hamsters don't live that long, but I guess I'm in the market for another one now.

Awww, I remember when I lost my first hamster. It was my first experience with death also.

Yeah 2-3 years isn't that long. And that's if they're healthy robust hamsters.

I hope your daughter's OK. 🙁

Oh and Kered, no one disgusts me more than you. 😛

Well, this may sound mean but I accidentally killed my hamster when I was six.....I didn't know I was killing him.

An excellent home protection tool indeed!

I went to Petsmart a few months ago and bought a teddy bear hamster. Well when the guy who opened the cage started to point at the three hamsters in there I noticed each one put up there hands as though protecting their faces, but one dodged the hardest, and I fell in love. I saw this small black and white teddy bear hamster and knew I didn't have to spend a lot of time instilling fear into him. I bought another, and the two had babies, and those babies were beaten by their mother. I had to get rid of them cause I was afraid the mother would kill the babies, and I didn't have the money to buy more than one cage.

I used to own ferrets, I miss them.

Hamsters are okay, but can they babysit?

Only if you can fit the kids into the hamster habitat, they can. 😀

BTW, is that your baby, Nightfall?

Yes, Orange, that's Shem's and my little progeny. Lord help her.

She's doing great, thanks. The hamster, Lila, had a magnificent burial... I should be so well attended when my time comes! New York kids are so resilient! Thanks again.

Heh, she's adorable! It looks like the rabbits love her, too, but she looks curious about what's coming at her.

Glad to hear your daughter's alright and that Lila had such a nice send-off. 🙂

You might think she's a hamster...

....but she's my dog.

OMG I have a dog like that, only he's half chihuaua and half pomeranian.

I can't believe no one has posted any fish yet. :wow: Fish are WAY better than some smelly, eat a hole in the wall and procreate until you have to put out traps, hamster anyday. The only pitfall to having fish is that alot of them don't seem to live that long. The two below are breeder's photos of my two show bettas: Fluffy Sunshine (the orange fellow) and Optimus Prime (blue and yellow crowntail). Optie was my buddy. He danced everytime i came home, and danced a different way for each food he got that day. He loved the bloodworms best, i think. I showed him in two betta shows and then bred him with some lovely copper crowntail ladies and then died of the ripe old age of 3 (which really wasn't too long ago). I miss him tho.

My first Ferret was named Rocky. Well His full name was Rocky Bal Boa (I'm not a Rocky fan, but mom really named him. I thought of Rocky, she came up with Bal Boa...) anyhoo he was like a little puppy. He followed me around, stood on my shoulders when I walked around. And he came to me when I called him. For some reason though he developed a fear of enclosed places. He crawled into a can once and couldn't find his way out (trust me there was a way right above his head) and he started to scream a god awful scream. I jumped up and he looked at me like he didn't know what the hell was going on.

Well One night I heard him crying in his cage, and knew he was lonely. So a month later I bought a new ferret named Baby. Baby was a good girl, but Rocky was jealous and for the first few nights made her sleep alone. Well he eventually warmed up to her, and didn't sleep a single night without her (if it could be helped.) I didn't spend a lot of time with Baby at first. I for some reason looked at her as though she were just a play thing for Rocky. Well once dad saw Baby had gotten hung up on a curtain and was forced on her back and couldn't roll over, well I went in there and saw her trying to get away from me, and crying. And I knew I needed to look at her like I did Rocky. So I spent a lot of "alone" time with her. And soon she warmed up to me. She liked it when I held her, or rubbed her belly, or the back of her legs.

Well I did a lot of moving when I graduated High school, and of course they came with me. Rocky got sick though. I took him to the vet and he had to stay there for a week. Baby got sad, and hardly did anything until I brought Rocky home. Rocky was a tough ferret and hated to be groomed, but once he was brought home Rocky was so happy he just allowed Baby to groom him. Well he got sick again, and I couldn't afford to help him. My family saw them as Rodents, and the only option I had was to take them to a "no kill" facility and give them away. I couldn't bare to seperate them, keep one and give another away. So that's what happened. I just keep in mind that they are with a better family, though that might just be to hide my own guilt about the whole thing.

Well that's it. Cya!

No picture.

Well, I'd post a picture of my invisible Vorpal Bunny, but the film was damaged in processing at Shemp's Photo Hut.
