if you can remember the long ago;

did you have fist fights when you were younger?

do you think fighting help you to deal with others now?

I am now 56. I had fistfights as a child, with the last one at age 13. I don't it helps me deal with people now, no.

It didn't teach you to find other ways of solving your probems?

I think most males had them growing up. I doubt they help us deal with things today, though. If a situation arises where I'm needing to beat someone's ass, it's going to be an act of self-defense, not responding to some adolescent playground shoving match that gets broken up by the yard-duty.

Unless they *really* need some sense beaten into them. :jester:

But no, I don't think it helps you deal with things as a man, no. Self-discipline, intelligence, and the wisdom of experience. Common sense. A sense of decency, and clear cut ideas about right and wrong.

Oh, but it *DOES* help out when beating some respect into punks who refer to me as a "fart"... 😎

it seems that it did help, because you learn that you only fight for self defense not to control others.

I never tried to solve my problems by starting a fight. In all cases, I was defending myself when attacked.

You put "Fart" in the thread title....
I will now wait for Maniac to come in and plug his thread.
Anything about flatulance brings in the manaic.

But on topic
fighting never solved much when I was a kid.
The main fight I got into looked like the scene from "A Christmas Story" some bully took away my glasses and was holding them above his head and threw dirt in my face...so I jumped on him and wailed on his face.
After 3 teachers pulled me off of him....he didnt bully me anymore...but that still didnt solve the root cause....the bully just found someone else.

As I grew up I learned with reasonable people, you can find a reasonable solution. But in some cases with unreasonable, irrational people...there is no way to talk to them so I carry protection...just in case.

Boy, was i disappointed to see this thread had nothing to do with flatulence. false advertisement! :ranty:

I've done a lot of fighting, mostly as an adult when I had a nightclub security job. Fighting doesn't help - except to exert physical control. I was trying to get the asshole outside, and they weren't in a state to be reasoned with.

I don't like fighting. Usually it involved wrestling, and that messed up my clothes. When I hit someone it hurt (knuckles usually skinned on faces, wrist sometimes sprained on abdomens). It didn't solve a damn thing except that they took their silly-ass problems elsewhere (usually to jail).

As for not being scared to fight - I think I was almost always scared, or I guess apprehensive would be a better word, before every encounter I had with a guy sober enough to cause me damage. My point is that it didn't seem to get easier as time went on. My verbage and attitude did - I got to the point that I could smooze most of the assholes out the door without getting physical.

When I was younger I did have fist fights , fractured my hand in one . It did seem at a young age to gain a bit of respect but now I use kindness and my smarts to deal with people . If I have to defend myself then that's what i have to do . Where I live , people can be very violent , you can land up with your skull cracked open or a knife or bullet in you , not my cup of tea , I know better than to try to pop off my mouth with these people ................. and Dan , just as long as you were'nt called an OLD FART !!!!!!!!!

Last fight I got into was July 4, 1994, and it was one of the cliche barroom brawls; everyone was involved in one way or another at one time or another. I did not get hit, kicked, thrown or crushed. I threw one guy, kicked a second in the crotch (C'mon, he was a really big guy!), and wrestled a barstool away from a third. My point? I hurt for 2 weeks afterward. If I get in a fight today, I better end it quick. I still have the knowledge and spirit, but the tools are getting mighty rusty.

From a 41 year old....

The last fistfight I had was back when I was 12 I think. I decided to stand up to the neighborhood bully at a dirt pile at the end of my block. It was a literal dirt pile, the town kept it there for when it snowed. One pile was salt, another gravel, another just sand. We swung and pushed our faces into the dirt for quite a while. The other kids were rooting for their favorite as we both swung with our might. I bloodied his nose, and he bloodied mine, he cut his hand, and I cut my leg, but we both had such hatred that thinking back now it was probably the closest I ever became to being wild. We actually were both quite exhausted when my uncle came and grabbed us both to stop it. We were both on the ground, panting hard and still trying to swing when my uncle ended it.

What did it solve? Not much, but it was the last time the bully bothered me. I call the fight a draw.

Before that I used to have a fight with another boy who lived around the block. We seemed to fight at least one a year over something stupid. The thing I remember was that whenever I fought him by his house I got creamed, and whenever we fought by my house he got creamed.

In high school I became friends with a guy who wanted to enter the golden gloves in NYC, so he would train in his garage. His father had once fought many times and only lost once. I would train with him too because I liked boxing. Even though this guy was like 180 and I was only 120 at the time, we sparred. There were 2 other guys who would spar with us too.

I remember one time an outsider wanted to spar and chose me because I was the smallest and knew me as a timid kid. I thought I was going to get killed because he was taller than me and pretty fast. I was pretty surprised when I found I could almost tag him at will. It felt good. I actually had forgotten the incident until he reminded me of it at our 20th high school reunion. He said he was so surprised, and knew afterward not to mess with me again LOL.....

All the fighting did was build a little confidence when I won, and taught me not to be so stupid the next time when I lost.

The closest I ever came to it since..... was a fight outside a diner where this drunk Marine type called out one of my friends. I stood there with my 3 friends while he stood there with his 3 friends. I took my stance and......saw my 3 friends go into action LOL. One came behind him and hit him in the back of the neck, the next hit his stomach and the third broke his nose and he hit the pavement. It happened so fast I stood there jaw open staring at the guy, his 3 friends looking at me. My 3 were already running to the car yelling my name. It happened so fast I was stunned. I should have been jumped, luckily I wasn't. Can't really say I was in the fight though.
