Tracy and I welcome pms or posts here with your experiences with this syndrome...

All are welcome to call in to the show on Tuesday night 6/23/09 to share with us live...

My brother has Asperger's Syndrome, and when he was about seven
or eight years old, my mom discovered Secretin. It was still in the
experimental stages at that point, but she got him into a clinical trial
(which unfortunately fizzled out, and he only got one dose), but it
made a huge difference in him. Mom ended up investing in the drug,
and I believe she still owns the stocks she purchased. I don't know
if there are any clinical trials going on at this point, or if it's ever even
used. Most parents I know who have a child with Asperger's have never
heard of Secretin. I highly recommend checking into it, after what it did
for my brother. He had many issues that he dealt with growing up, including
Fetal Alcohol Effects, Sensory Integration Disorder, and Attention Deficit
Hyperactive Disorder (my parents adopted him when he was 13 months old).
Anyway, look into Secretin. And find a really good school system, even if it
means moving. My brother was diagnosed in Kindergarten, and he was in 5th
grade before my mom was able to get him an IEP (Individual Education Plan)
and even after that, he was shuffled from one grade to the next without ever
having passed on his own. My mom ended up hiring an attorney when he was
a freshman in high school. They never did him any favors, and he went through
school thinking that he could do nothing, and it would be good enough.

This disorder, among many, is very difficult to deal with, but there's so much more
out there now in the way of support and education.

We are in a good school system and he is on an IEP and getting counseling in school from the community health organization. They will also be providing regular psych evals and medication as needed. There is one medication that was recomended by the first Psychiactric consultant that we are looking into as it is the only one recognized and approved by the FDA for the treament of children..

Don't be afraid to look into other medications as well. It took a long time
and many different medications before finding the right combination for my
brother. And, it changed as he grew.
