Just wanted to see how many gardeners we had hanging around and what kind of stuff you're planting.

I just placed an order for the first wave of bulbs to totally redo our flower garden areas come fall. Since we weren't in our new house until late Nov. last year, I ended up doing mainly a wildflower mix out front for this year. It was pretty in some stages. But, it got totally overgrown and looked like hell by the time I got around to yanking most of it out yesterday. So, I'm going to do things right for next year. I'll still need to get some mid and late summer bloomers to put in. But, my spring and early summer should look great...esp. framed out with landscape timber and using solar lighting to accent and add depth.

In addition to the stuff I already have bulbs for (mainly stuff from my grandmothers' gardens) and my rose bushes and sedum, it should do nicely. In case anyone is interested, here's a copy of the stuff I ordered...

Then, of course, we'll have the vegetable garden again too. I just hope the weather is better for it next year. This year hasn't done as much as usual. Plus, we have a woodchuck eating half or everything that does come up. Grrr!

What's everyone else planning on?

Gave my garden up for a pool but I always had tomatos, pumpkins and cucumbers and once in awhile watermelons

as for me i've got a small container garden type thing going on, planted a couple of daisies with some potato vines...it looks nice but the daisies have already started to peter out..the vines look nice, starting to change color...i also have some climbing roses on a trellis system but they didn't do much this year unfortunately...not sure what we all are gonna do next year (neighbors have a greenhouse and we buy plants from them sometimes)...also have a hanging basket with petunias that are looking awful since we had such a wet July...and my other flowers in a container, can't remember what they are called, they are still nice, probably one of those ones that stay nice all season long.

I've had a bad year as far as actually doing anything new or different. It's been quite wet and humid in between those periods....not conducive to getting my gardening enthusiasm going I guess. Working with my Dad right now on getting grafts/seeds off my hibiscus for his place, but other than that I'm not feeling energetic.

I'm just starting to get my new yard in shape. I'm planting some trees this weekend but so far in the yard I have....

A lemon, guava and fig tree. 3 Birch Trees and a Magnolia that I planted in memory of someone dear.

I've got iris bulbs in that I brought from the old house that are in the yard right outside my bedroom door.

I'm starting to lay out my plans for a pond with a water fall, the pad for a spa and a retaining wall to give the yard more room for some lawn. I have an herb garden just outside the dining room. One the sunny side of the house I'll be putting in some raises beds for vegetables. Not sure exactly what I'll grow yet but as soon as the beds are in I'll figure it out. I have 2 grape vines already established (that the birds just LOVE!)

Over the pergola that will go in I'm going to grow some gourds and wisteria.

Boy... .I have lots of work to do! LOL

Q - I hear that. I put a lot in this year AFA the veggies and entirely too much AFA the wildflowers. But, the weather has been less than conducive to the veggies growing or producing well. (The wildflowers came up like...well...wildflowers.) The weather has also kept me from doing much weeding, which doesn't help matters any.

Jan - Sounds like you've got a good start on things for having been in so short a time. Do you ever sleep? lol 😉 I've considered doing a water feature (probably a wall fountain if/when I actually do it). But, the yard is too small and chopped up for much else. I've been playing with ideas for coming years...kind of a step-by-step conversion of both front and back yards. The front is bigger and more visible to others. So, that will be first. I'll be reconfiguring everything in a few weeks and then planting the bulbs so it's ready for spring. The back will be done in segments, starting with a larger patio area (next year?).

For anyone looking to plan things out and get an idea of how it would look, the Better Homes and Gardens website has a garden planner that (while not super) is free and good enough to get a general idea of how things will appear. They have a variety of things to include, like patio stone, landscape timbers, water features, etc. Here's the link if anyone is interested in checking them out... BH&G Garden Planner
