For some reason avi files play upside down in my windows media player.

Can anyone help me out here?

Try standing on your head. Just be careful not to get any in your eyes. 🙂

Hmmm....I don't have a simple solution for you, but there is an article in Microsoft's knowledge base that deals with this issue. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=269967

Maybe your divx codec (divxg40) has the "force vertical flip" setting in no flip. try adjusting it to "flip output".
The icon appears in the bottom right corner and it shows a kind of screen (it only appears when you play .avi video files
