I've had sinus problems all my life, and all my life I've lived east of the Mississippi-- in Indiana or Florida. I've often wondered if the more arid climate out west might help my sinuses. Any thoughts?

Greg, I had an aunt who moved to the Pheonix area several years ago because of sinus issues. Once they started their "beautification" program, then ended up with just as many allergens in the air. I'm the same with my sinuses...always have been. Your best bet is a good air purifyer and/or AC that has the filters changed on a regular basis.

What kind of sinus problems do you have? I might have some good advice or I know a TON of doctors... I could give you ideas you haven't tried out yet.

Speaking for myself (I've lived out west most of my life), the climate doesn't really make a difference; I've had sinus problems more than once.

Thanks for the replies.

Ticklkitten-- I guess my problems are pretty basic. My sinuses get stopped up to the point that my nose swells. Of course, then they back up and the stuff goes down my throat, and sometimes makes me physically ill, if you get my drift. 🙂 Sometimes, too, my sinuses get infected, which requires a doctor's visit and medication. We think I'm probably allergic to something, but no doctor I've seen has thought it was bad enough to do those tests. Aren't you glad you asked? 🙂

Greg, Iam sorry to hear of your sinus problems. I have major problems as well. The area I live in, Lancaster, PA, has many pollutants in the air. There are mold spores, pollen, and, they say, industrial pollutants which drift here from the Great Lakes, and the factories in Western PA. Often, my allergies begin as an allergy, with runny nose, scratchy throat, a sinus headache, stuffed sinuses on both sides, and can turn into a cold. Iam dealing with this currently, as I have a cold that originally started as an allergy. What I do, since Iam allergic to many perscription allergy medications, is to take a nasal spray given to me by my doctor, and also to fight the headaches when they occur with Tylenol once or twice a day. I find this helps.
Good Luck fighting your allergies, it can make one feel miserable, I've had them for years. It is worst for most of us in spring, summer and fall. I do hope you can bring yours under control, so you can begin to feel better, as Iam trying to do with mine. Take care.

Mitch,

Thanks for your kind post. I use a nasal spray and take an allergy pill each night before bed so I can sleep through the night. We'll just have to keep on keepin' on, I guess.

You're quite welcome. Iam glad my post was helpful. Your method of fighting your allergy sounds good.
One final thing, and maybe this was posted earlier in the thread, I didnt see. I do know that for many people with either allergies, or any kind of issues with breathing, they are often advised to live in a dry climate. My late grandmother had emphasema, and lived in humid South Florida for ten years. She later moved back to NJ, and her condition seemed to abate some once she took the move. Her NJ doctor told her that he believed that living in the heat and humidity of South Florida made her condition worse, and, that in the cold winter weather, which the family feared she would suffer with due to her breathing by experiencing shortness of breath, and more frequent colds, actually had the reverse affect. In fact, during the last 7 years of her life in NJ, she had less colds and issues with breathing, and was hospitalized less for allergy related and breathing problems and colds than she did when she lived in Florida. Any doctor we spoke to about her condition, said that a dry climate, like Arizona, or a cold one, like the North in winter, was actually better for her than year round heat and humidity. Based on her health, I would tend to agree. Heat, humidity, and change of weather can be a curse for anyone with allergies or breathing problems. My mom now has emphasema, and allergy related Asthma, and her problems increase during changable seasons like fall and spring, or in very hot weather. She said she actually feels better in colder weather. So, allergy problems, even for those with lung conditions, can be seasonal, and dictated by climate, or at least has been the case with my mom and grandmother.

Mitch,

I've always heard that, too. As you can see, I live in Florida, but hopefully I'll be moving back to Indiana soon. Exploring the West, alas, will have to wait.

Wow.

Hey, any hope for a golfer who's allergic to grass ?

just kidding.

great post !

I kinda like his character. He always knows what to say to Charlie Brown. Ohhhh. Sinus, not Linus. LOL, j/k. My sinuses are pretty bad too, especially during the spring. I'll have sinus drainage, pretty bad at times, and it can cause some serious headaches. I just use lots of eyedrops and blow my nose a lot. Spicy foods seem to help me a little, too. 😀

Professor Tkl,

Thanks for that very thorough response. No, I've never had any real testing done on my sinuses. None of my physicians have ever thought my problem serious enough to warrant that. Maybe I'm just a big baby. 🙂 I do use nasal spray each night, and an allergy pill (Allavert, currently), but we switch off sometimes, trying to find something that works better.

i hear that....

my sinuses are always giving me a rough time, seems like almost every morning I wake up, I have to use nose spray to open them up to breath... :disgust:
