ok....bands that you think should have quit while they were ahead..meaning after their first hit, or album..or cd or whatever..eight track? hehe..
ok and you won't agree with me but hey difference of opinions make the world spin round..

Motley Crue...i believe that Shout at the Devil was their best..

Aerosmith..after Dream ON i didn't like them at all

Guns'n'Roses....Welcome to the Jungle..after that axel's ego became too much for me to handle..

Pearl Jam...ditto with Eddie...i liked Even Flow and that's it..

Audioslave...i so loved their first hit...take it out on me or whatever it was called..then they rather went downhill...to me anyway..

now bands that i thought were going to be one hit wonders but got better after were bands such as Nickelback...Green Day...

don't all throw stones at me lol...you can name whoever you think should have quit after their first hit..

Due to a great thing up here called "Canadian content", all our radio stations have to play a percentage of Canadian material each broadcast day... so I hear a lot of Nickelback...too much Nickelback. Their first stuff was good but now it's to a point where you hear them all the time.

Agrees with Guns N Roses,

Limp Bizkit was another, though since they pretty much are finito there is a silver lining.

Finally, and one of the biggest for me, System of a Down had some great songs on their first album (Toxicity and Chop Suey among others) but their recent album leaves much to be desired for me.

Systems first album was a self-titled, Toxicity and Chop Suey were on their second album Toxicity.

I agree about Nickleback. I didn't even like them when they were new.

I don't listen to much heavy metal or Linkin Park-like rock, so I can't really make a decision on that, but I do believe that the "oldies but goodies" bands, like Aerosmith and Rolling Stones for example, were really REALLY good when my dad was a kid... But every time I hear about another bloody tour with these bands, their music just seems, to put it mildly, too modern for me. They were great when they didn't try to conform to today's audiences, who are so damn bent on pop and alternative that it drives me nuts.

Nickelback makes me want to retch.

I disagree on Motley Crue I liked their stuff through Girls, Girls, Girls... after that they fell off the face of the Earth. I agree on Gun's N Roses.

Do you know any relatively mainstream songs off their first album? I don't... I've heard their latest album as well... nothing compared to Toxicity, in fact far worse in my opinion.

I'm probably going to date myself here but:

Emerson, Lake and Palmer. The only album after their first that was worth the vinyl it was pressed on is Brain Salad Surgery.

i disagree a bit on GNR, just cos that song was on their 2nd album 🙂

one of the best albums ever though ! screwed up the thing a bit later with drugs ego & stuff, sad they had a great line up

^ o silly me lol..maybe i should have stated their first hit..

and i'm rather surprised that many are agreeing with my pick of Guns'n'roses..it was Slash that made the band what it was anyway..i got so i couldn't stand to hear or see Axel..why does an ego have to play such a part with these people??

Mr. Big..though the first album wasn't all that good IMO either. They seem to be well liked by too many people for my taste.

Kid Rock

Ugly Kid Joe

I disagree about Crue - I think they've gotten better over time. In fact the Dr. Feelgood CD is probably their best. Girls, Girls, Girls; Kickstart My Heart, Don't Go Away Mad, Without You, Dr. Feelgood, ...how can you not love that stuff!

Aerosmith hit their high point with Toys in the Attic. After that it was pretty much a decline. I thought the last one - Honkin for Bobo - would do it for them but it just kind of disappeared in the night. It looked like a return to the the second album - Get Your Wings (probably one of my two favourite from them) - in that it was more of a straight hard rock/blues stripped down kind of thing. Sad really. They had a few here and there during the decline - Rag Doll, Other Side - that were pretty good.

Nickleback... I love them. Probably my favourite band right now - next to Velvet Revolver.

GNR kind of is VR. Just lacking Axl - but who needs that screwed up guy! They should just find someone who kind of sounds like him but isn't a head case. I would almost agree with you about GNR but 'Use Your Illusion' is a great follow up to 'Appetite for Destruction'. Some great stuff there.

Green Day are hit and miss with me. I liked American Idiot but was so so on the rest of their stuff. Holiday is a phenominal song. I love it ... but there isn't a lot of GD stuff I can say that about.

Pearl Jam - I like them better than Green Day but I agree, they've got nothing left to say

I think Finger Eleven is done. I'm thinking they'll just be a one hit wonder.

Who should call it quits? The Stones, The Who.. they really need to wrap it up and call it a day.

STP, I'm looking forward to what they might do now that Scott's back with them.... as long as he's got his problem under control.

BTW, how was your anniversary?

I loved them.

Used to see them everytime they came to my city. ... but I have to agree at least in part.. if you weren't into prog then you probably only needed Brain Salad Surgery. Me.. I love a lot of that stuff... still.... even though I'm more of a hard rock guy... especially late 80's hard rock.

Too bad about Mr. Big. They had a great line up... Paul Gilbert... and MY HERO Billy Sheehan.... If I could just have his skills for one day!!!!

ack i hated those crue songs...dr feelgood..and girls girls girls..too commercial for me..but hey that's only my opinion..

and my anniversary was fun thanks...^

Mr Big had a cute singer lol..

and although Audioslave rather went down hill imo...Chris Cornell's voice..sighs...makes me melt every time..

Isabeau, I agree on the Green Day count. I've been an avid listener since 'Dookie' and never imagined they'd get to the stage they are today, but they've evolved their sound and kept me listening.

For bands that should have quit a while ago: Foo fighters should have quit after 'The colour and the shape'. Though it is their second album. As far as I'm concerned, It's one of the best albums ever released, so it's all downhill from there. Also, Weezer should have quit after 'Pinkerton'. I love that album, and everything ever since has been distinctly mediocre.

Foreigner
Styx
Journey

They put out some good stuff, but they should have quit before they put out the likes of "I Want To Know What Love Is," "Waiting For A Girl Like You," "Babe," "Open Arms," and "Faithfully." And for goodness sakes, Steve Perry should never have gone solo to put out that horrid "Oh Sherrie."

I don't think you can really count Journey on there though. "Open Arms" and "Faithfully" were off their fourth and fifth main CDs, Escape and Frontiers. That said, I'd say any of their stuff with Steve Perry was good, though Trial By Fire had some I wasn't too crazy about, like "One More" and "Castles Burning." The CDs with Steve Augeri never really grabbed me either. Arrival was ok, but nothing really special, and Generations... I just couldn't find it in myself to pick it up. Their new CD, Revelations, is pretty good though. I won't say the new guy is as good as Perry, but he's a LOT better than Augeri.

I just can't stand the sappy love songs they put out in the 80s. I absolutely hate "Open Arms" and "Faithfully", and am not too big a fan of Steve's voice.

tracy chapman
tanita tikaram
tricky
laibach

especially the first two, they could quit after their first album... after it was a mess

ps: for audioslave it was better that they never did an album... ah ah ah

One word...

Metallica.

Sure there were some gems up until the eponymous release, but there were a lot of stinkers. Past that, there wasn't enough good in any given album to warrant looking at it. Then, they stopped releasing new music so they could ride on the coattails of prior success and lawsuits against the fans who made them successful.

Boy George and Culture Club...his best song was his first hit...Do You Really Want to Hurt Me...ah he had beautiful eyes...
