Barefoot Cheerleaders 7-13-10

I did not realize how many cheerleaders performed at the 2008 Olympics in China. The official announcement was as follows:
"China will be featuring cheerleaders at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. After a nationwide competition, 428 cheerleaders were selected by the Cultural Activities Department of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games and the Gymnastics Managing Center of the General Administration of Sport. The team began training on June 15, 2008 and are scheduled to perform at 10 venues for 17 sports. The New England Patriots Cheerleaders traveled to China to help train the squad from June 30-July 4, 2008."
SI and several other sources have published pictures of the cheerleaders, many of whom performed barefooted.

I read that some viewers complained that the TV coverage of the Olympics did not include more focus on the cheerleaders. I have to agree with that. Why would you want to waste time watching a sporting event when you could be seeing barefoot cheerleaders!

It's a shame that most of their uniforms during routines require shoes. I would love to see a barefoot pyramid or something. Former cheerleaders may be able to answer this question: Do cheerleaders sometimes practice in bare feet?
