Sitting down to watch my Royals battle the Red Sox. For those that don't know, the Royals are playing meaningful games in September for the first time in 30 years, since I was 16. Next March, I will be 46, it's been THAT long.

But something else struck me tonight, the National Anthem tonight wasn't sung by some pop star, not by the latest Grammy award winner, it was performed without words. Tonight, it was performed by a Marine Brass Quintet. No missed words, notes held to long, ornamentation that took away from the performance, just eloquent. It was a rendition without the fanfare, perfect for a day of remembrance. It literally made me shiver with goosebumps!

The way it should have been done

I totally agree, rdhd...with a little "correction", if you don't mind..."The way it should ALWAYS be done!!"

It is an "anthem"...a celebration of a country, it's bleak early history, and of those who persevered to keep it this way...throughout the years!!! It's too bad it's has become (but not always)...a "springboard" for some "pop star" to "put on a performance" in such a way, as to seemingly promote themselves, or something new they just released. Like Barber said...this way there are no "missed or forgotten words" (as I've seen happen)..no "held notes"..and no "self promotion"!!!

With one exception, if no one minds...The way Hendrix "woke up" the crowd at Woodstock!!! I'm not saying that it was right to do it that way...but it was kind of "history in itself", IMO. That's my two cents!!!

One honorable mention to my original thread: Superbowl XXV, in 1991 between the Bills and Giants. Whtney Houston's rendition just after the Gulf War started.
