Question: What is the difference between, on the one hand, a colorful and eccentric but lovable character who enlivens the clubhouse, and, on the other hand, a dangerous nutcase who disrupts the clubhouse?

Old school answer: About 100 points in batting average: the former is batting .330 and the latter .230.

Modern answer: The former has an OBP/SLG/OPS line of .400/.600/1.000 and the latter has .270/.280/.550.
