Paul Robeson must be mentioned. Anyone ever hear his version of 'Let My People Go'? Chilling stuff...

Al Green, Marvin Gaye.....everything those men touched turned to gold... :bowing:

I read some of your post and see some of you mentioned louis Armstrong the great Sachmo.
I know alot of you out there maybe under 25 or 35 or even 45 and may not truly understand the contribution that this man has made to American music as a whole.
Here is a man born at the turn of the 20th century in New Orleans and in his 20s took the trumpet and revolutionized music with such innovative improv on his horn that the reverbarations are still in the core of pop music to this day.
His hot 5 and hot 7 records were innovations all on their own and anyone who listens to Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen or Jimmy Page would be doing their ears a disservice if they did not listen to Sachmo to see where all that music was born and came from!!
As a singer Armstrong at a recording session once forgot the words to a song and made up some nonsense blabbling and thus scat singing was born. People like Ella Fitzgerald and Bing Crosby picked up on this style and used it in their own music. Any and all Jazz musicians will mention Armstrong no matter what intrument they play as an influence same with jazz singers.
Every rock and roll musician black or white every rapper every r and b singer owes a debt to Armstrong even if they know it or not. And well its just to bad in a world where beauty and sexuality and instant American Idol fame means more than sheer talent and hard work its easy to forget those who truly trailblazed with excellence. Long live the man with the true golden horn!!

Just when I was headed off to bed......

I knew I forgot someone very, very important who many could say inspired modern funk and possibly hip-hop. A notable singer and composer in his own right:

The one, and only...CAB CALLOWAY.

Don't know if anyone mentioned this gentleman yet, great soul singer from the late 60s who made a comeback a couple years ago.....

Howard Tate

Stevie wonder and Jimi hendrix

Ill tell you somthing Stevie in my eyes is up there with Billy Joel and Elton John as a major songwriter and alot of the younger singers today like John Legend have borrowed heavy from Stevie. As for Stevie listen to the brilliant bassist James Jamerson of the funk brothers as he kicks ass through a song like "I was made to Love her" or listen to the dynamics decending guitar line in a wonderful uplifting tune like "Signed Sealed Delivered". It does not get much better than that.
Hendrix himself was the aire of a tradition in music passed on from Armstrong to Roy Eldrige to Dizzy and Charlie Parker on to Miles Davis who actually jammed and recorded with Hendrix. As far as Im concerned he invented the electric guitar. No one could get the sounds out of guitar in 1967 that Hendrix got. When he went to England he scared the heck out of everyone as well as got their repect, for here was the real thing playing the blues right back at them. My understanding is at the Montery Pop festival The Who refused to follow him and he in turn did not want to follow them. One will never again see a concert with that great a lineup.

Blimey! a thread on the TMF not started by me, about my kind of music (generally speaking) although the thread starter seems to have been badly corrupted as it was about Black American Singers, but I am enjoying the corruption!

well you jolly well should!! 😛

Well, even though it has been mentioned before, I have to say that I fell in love with Sam Cooke's music when I was fifteen years old.

Though, I got a huge kick when my friends rooted through my tape collection in high school during parties.

"Hmmmm. Let's see. what do we have here? Black sabbath. Sepultura. Napalm Death. Megadeth. Slayer. Sam Cooke. Suicidal ten-WHAT THE FUCK????"
