This thread was inspired by the earlier "Perfect Rock Album" one. What do you guys think was the best album of 2003? I would say The Thirteenth Step by A Perfect Circle.

The White Stripes' Elephant gets my vote. However, I heard Outkast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below is the critics' album of 2003. I dig Outkast, so I'm gonna purchase that album soon.

I don't listen to critics....nor do I buy too many new cds or records.(yes, they still make new records)

But, I did see Outcast on Saturday Night Live recently and thought they were really cool.

The one new cd I bought last year, that I still have and play nonstop is The New Pornographers "Electric Version". The cd is so much fun and songs are absolutley addictive.

Well...I dont think there were any best records of 2003 LOL LOL..There hasnt been a good new record in the pop/rock charts from a brand new artist since probably the mid to late 80's.

Krokus

I hate to be a prude, but A Rush of Blood to the Head doesn't count, because it came out in 2002. Although, that is a very good album....

Right on with White Stripes and Outkast latest stuff. Trapt also had a great CD.

yanno, I was thinking that in the back of my mind, but I wasn't sure if it was 02 or 03...thanks for the correction. As for the original question, hmmm...the new Shinhwa album (the guys in my sig, *drool*) was by far my fav cd of 03.

Evanescence - Fallen
Eminem - The Eminem Show
Staind - 14 Shades of Grey

And although it came out in 2001, Nickelback's "Silver Side Up" continues to be the CD I listen to the most.

I'm with Mimi on Nickleback. Thier last two albums are good enough to carry over...

I didn't buy too many new CDs this year, mostly just filling my collection of the stuff I dig. I think that "Fallen" by Evanescence is one of the few I did buy and listen to more than twice. That doesn't mean it's the best album of the year, but it's the one I liked best.

Now, if you count live albums (even though they're a collection of previously released material) I'd say hands-down that "Rush in Rio" was the best thing I bought all year...along with Peter Gabriel's "Growing Up Live" in a close second. Both on DVD, so I don't know if that counts, either.

Anybody Get A Taste Of This Late Entry?

Dream Theater-"Train Of Thought"...an awesome progressive metal work (although not Dream Theater's all-time best, IMHO...platitudes...*sigh*), in my opinion, because it (again) has the integrity of 80's underground metal (leads, breaks and rhythms) infused with the the drop D and B alternate tuning rhythm fashions of the 2000's (as only Petrucci can and his Mesa Boogie amplfication systems can apply them)...exotic and fused scale modalities...arpeggio sweeps...13/24 polyrhythms on drums...the whole 9 yards...I hope self-proclaimed numetal "musicians" everywhere take heed of this one as I feel they have been upstaged (speaking as a musician from the "raw musicianship" frame of reference)...and when just one of them can play rhythm and lead with the finesse of John Petrucci...I will humbly tip my hat to them.

Disturbed-"Believe"Very thoughful and creative alternate "drop D" tuned rhythms...lead absent (not to fret...as I find most numetal "lead absent")

To weigh in on the Nickelback, Dave and Mimi,...yes...they also have thoughtful numetal rhythms...but...Dream Theater was there FIRST and the Mesa Boogie high-end amplfiers have contributed a GREAT DEAL to both of their respective guitar amplfier tone character(s) (Gotta love old school Mark IIs and the new Road Kings for SOME applications 😉 )

I know I haven't made much reference to lyrics here...Haven't heard much that was "intellectually stimulating" since "late old school Rush." Maybe Dave will back me on this one...maybe not. Dream Theater is SO strong instrumentally, I can find it in my heart to overlook it...Disturbed's lyrics belong in the ranks of "mindless" with the other numetalers, IMHO...Nickelback's lyrics don't offend my intellect quite as much as the generic numetal bands of the day, IMHO.

After that...it all gets kind of generic and homogenized, at least, to me, anyhow. *hopping off his soapbox now* Narrow-focused and pompously opinionated bastard when it comes to music, ain't I? :wow: :sowrong: 😛 LOL!

I'll echo you on Disturbed, Pete. While the album "Believe" (their latest album, with the track "Prayer") was released in 2002, it came towards the end of the year, and made quite an impact on the rock charts throughout 2003. I honestly don't believe (no pun intended) that a bad song can be found on that album. Truly one of the best modern rock bands we have right now, IMO. (though no one can beat Nickelback in my book...just love those guys)

Mimi 🙂

i'll agree with mimi on believe. Disturbed is one of the greatest of the new metal bands out today. Check out their live shows and you too shall be a believer. You can hear the obvious influence of pantera on believe.

I can agree with ya, Pete...Dream Theater (along with possibly Savatage) are at the top of the "prog-metal" heap. Ok, maybe throw in Fates Warning and Queensryche (when they were good).

However, I love Nickleback for different reasons. I love jamming on technically proficient tunes and grooving with them when my mind is all about that...but there's a part of me that just likes good songs, whatever the approach. Nickleback doesn't come anywhere close to the level of musicianship inherent in DT work and such, but the songwriting is fantastic and the melodies are powerful. A well-written song can live forever while a well-written solo will become legendary mostly to the band's fans.

NB's music seems to always hit a chord with me for some reason. The first one I ever heard was "Too Bad", and having never known my father, the song was very moving. Around my house, Nickleback is often reffered to as "Creed with Talent". 🙄

Have to go with the Flow

Evenescence "Fallen" and Nickleback( saw them in concert, back in October)

Metallica...??

I can say for sure, it was NOT St. Anger...!!

This is going to shock a few people. My favorite new album of 2003 was Sheryl Crow - C'mon, C'mon. I also liked Kid Rock - Cocky.

I know, I know, that's postively shocking.

it's a tie:

The White Stripes Elephant was phenomenal, too bad poor Jack got his ass arrested. That kid can play an axe like he was born to do it!

Good Charlotte's "The Young and the Hopeless" (I think that was 2003, or late 2002) There isn't one bad song on that album.
