Mean Streets- Scorcese's first film starring Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro. Takes place in Little Italy. Amazing film.

State of Grace- Does a cast get any better than this? Sean Penn, Ed Harris, John C. Reilly, and Gary Oldman. Irish mafia in Hell's Kitchen, NY. Based on true stories.

Goodfellas- The thing I love about this film was that is was mostly about criminals that wanted to be mafia soldiers.....these were hoods. Based on true stories of Henry Hill, who is still alive and on the run. You may catch him on Howard Stern now and then.

Godfather 1 and 2: Both classics. I won't say anything. See the film if you haven't.

Once Upon A Time In America- Great four hour flick about the Jewish mafia in lower NY. De Niro is amazing once again.

A Bronx tale, underrated movie.

From an earlier era: "White Heat" (1949) starring Jimmy Cagney.

from a guidette's POV...

😀

Fist 2 Godfathers and Goodfellas!

XOXO

I'm surprised that nobody yet mentioned "Scarface" with Al Pacino. But then again, I could be wrong in classifying this movie as a gangster movie. Have a Merry Christmas to all to whom it applies...:santasmil

And let us not forget "The Petrified Forest" (1936) which made Humphrey Bogart into a star for his portrayal of gangster Duke Mantee. 😀

Nobody can ever equate a ganster movie without mentioning the Godfather I & II, those are the best of all time IMHO. A Bronx tale was good as well. Another movie not mentioned was the Warriors, filmed in 1979. It was about a gang from Coney Island who went to a gang convention in the Bronx. While at this convention, one of the Warriors was accused of gunning down the leader of all the gangs in NYC. Basically, all the gangs were after the Warriors and they had to make it back to Coney Island alive. On their way back they encounter every gang, rumbled with them and won all the time. Loaded with action and suspenseful (when seeing it for the first time).

Yeah..I follow steph on this one!

I always liked "The Untouchables" too for some reason.

Though I'm not a big fan of gangster movies, I do like the ones done by Jimmy Cagney, especially Little Caesar and The Public Enemy.

i remember the warriors. Decent movie for the time. Have to enjoy a movie where the "good guys" can be killed and arrested. I'm surprised another gangster movie hasn't been mentioned. well, two actually.

One, if i remember the title right. "The King of New York" staring christopher walkens, with Lorence fishburn and wesly snipes with several other stars, i think. Anyway, Christopher walkens plays a gasnster who just gets out of jail and sets about to rule New york. However, his charactor fits more into the grey area, as oposed to good or bad. For enhample, has has no trouble selling coke, but he takes out his rivals which deal in things like 30 immigrants to a house sweat shops, or child prostitution rings. His main goal in the movie, or one of his goals, is to save a hospital in the run down area of town. Deffinitly worth a watch.

The other one is "suicide Kings". Also staring walkin, with Dennis Leary, and a volley of other young and upcoming actors with great preformances by all of them and a twist ending. One of my personal faves. Chris walken plays a re-tired moffie Don, who gets kiidnapped by a bunch of college kids when one of them has there sister kidnapped and held for ransom.

Not to be redundant...but "Goodfellas" and "The Godfather 1 and 2"
And to a lesser degree...although not really a gangster movie...
"Casino"

"Gangs of New York", with Leonardo Di Caprio............................................................................BWHAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAAAAAA!!!!!!! *gasp gasp*....Yeah right, I couldn't stand 5 minutes of that crap. :::wipes tears from eyes::: oh man I think I broke a rib when I fell down laughing...heh..whew....

Actually the Godfather ones are pretty good.

Can you count New Jack City as a gangster movie? I know I loved the Godfather movies but it's hard to denyy Nino Brown when he lets the guy go from the bridge busting out the comment "SEE YA AND I WOULDN'T WANNA BE YA".

I havent seen too many what one would call "Gangster Movies". Scarface with Al Pacino is the only one I can recall, unless you count comedies like Analyze This or That where Deniro played mob characters. I havent ever seen any old Jimmy Cagney movies or anything like that. Scarface was a very violent movie, lots of blood and gore.
Angel 6502, when you get a chance, please check your pirvate messages again. I left you another message in there. Take care, and I hope to hear from you again soon.

All the best.
Mitch
