What's up...

In case anyone cares, the number '2' after my screen name now...(it's me, strokeofgenius....hello!)...the number is because I could not log in under my old name and was having computer trouble so it was just easier to create a new name...something to do with switching over the mediaone e-mail adresses or something? Eh, whatever...water under the bridge...🙂

Anyhoo, who are your favorite comedians? (Stand-up guys, not actors or move-stars....) Although it does seem like every stand-up comedian, once they get a hit show or become a movie star, completely abandon the art of stand-up...maybe that's like "paying the dues" and once you get real big you don't have to do that anymore....here are my top 5....

1) Eddie Murphy -- One of the best stand-ups ever. I also give him props because in the mid-80s when his film career was going strong, he still stuck with it for a while...("Raw" is a great concert film.) I'd like to see him do more but I think he's trying to be a "serious actor" now.

2) Bill Cosby -- I personally think his concert films, especially "Bill Cosby: Himself" contain some of the funniest material ever performed. ("You also notice that right side of your face feels like it's sliding off of your skull...and your bottom lip is in your lap." -- from the 'Dentist' routine)

* Personal favorite of his: from his days in the Navy: "The guy turned the lights on at 4 Am, and it's the first time I ever HEARD light....(click)....(KKKKKaboom!)....lol 😛

3) Jerry Seinfeld -- He can be really funny, plus he seems to love the art of stand-up a great deal.

4) George Carlin (early years) -- Side-splitting. ("If you had short pants on during the summer and were seated on a wooden chair..oh, man, you had to do the one-cheek sneak...") ...yuk, yuk, yuk...

5) Louie Anderson -- Strange choice, I admit, but I've seen him perform and was rolling on the floor laughing. Pretty good storyteller.

Honorable mention: Chris Rock -- Funny dude. Not Eddie Murphy, but can come close when he tries hard.

And now, my 5 pics for comedians that, well, I was never a fan of, but others seem to worship them...

1) Sam Kinison -- I've been told he had some funny routines...maybe so, but since I can never hear them over all his yelling and screaming, I'm not sure. Maybe he is funny but his act wore me out after about two minutes...(kind of like Bobcat Goldwaith with his speech impediments...was that an act??) If you're a fan of his, more power to you. Me, I never found him funny.

2) Andy Kaufman -- By his own words, he wasn't exactly a 'comedian' but I know people who think this guy was a genius. I never got the guy. His whole schtick was pissing people off. (Kind of like the predecessor to Tom Green.) Big deal. I know people who do that much better than him, but they don't get big bucks for it. I admit, he could be funny as Latka on "Taxi" but in anything else he did, he was just talentless.

3) Arsenio Hall -- Man, did anybody laugh at his own stuff more than himself?

4) George Carlin (later years) -- When his whole act became 90 percent political and social commentary versus 5 percent actual jokes, I stopped being interested in him. I don't care how long he's been around, to me, comedians are supposed to make you laugh, not change your system of values.

5) Andrew Dice Clay -- One-trick pony. (Sex, sex, sex, women suck, sex, sex...)Tried to stretch a two-minute bit into an hour.

And the "split-decision" vote goes to:

Robin Williams -- He is either riotously funny, or painfully unfunny. When he takes the time to scale back a bit and not be so wild and crazy while trying to cram 500 jokes into one minute, he can get some great stuff in. He is a master at improvisation, but I still think he needs to be more disciplined. Ever see his HBO club act which aired in 1978 during his 'Mork and Mindy' days? Funny schtuff....

As a movie director: "ok, people, let's get ready now! Where's the dwarf?"

(drops to his knees)

"Dwarf" voice: I'm here!

Love that. 🙂

Who do you all like or dislike?

The Comedians who make me laugh out loud:

Bill Cosby- His "Himself" special, especially when he talks about his kids. Also "Bill at 49" from the 80s is just as hysterical.

Jerry Seinfeld- Just the little dumb things he talks about that we encounter in everyday life.

Larry Miller- did a real funny routine a few years back on "The 5 Stages of Drinking"

Kevin Meaney- All he has to to is start with his annoying "mother" voice and I'm on the floor......."What is WRONG with you???"

Oh boy....my list could go on for days. I love watching a good stand up act. Beats any series or comedy on television for viewing pleasure, IMO. My only problem is I can not remember the names of several comedians who have caught my attention over the years...lol. I'll give this a shot though.

Names I DO remember: (in no specific order)

1) Eddie Murphy
2) George Carlin
3) Bill Cosby (I have the dentist routine down pat...lol)
4) Tim Allen (Don't Stand Too Close To A Naked Man...EXCELLENT BOOK!)
5) Jeff Foxworthy
6) Robin Williams
7) Whoopi Goldberg
8) Jim Carey (In his old stand up days...he was awesome)
9) Wes Harrison
10) Richard Pryor

And now for those whose routines I remember, but not their names:

1) Bobby something. McKnight perhaps? Used to host the VH1 Comedy Half Hour. Funny as can be. Did lots of routines about his wife's pregnancy and lack of sex because of it. Always used the "Touch my pee-pee!!" line. Crawled on top of his wife one night, and when she woke, he claimed to have lost his wallet. Very hilarious.

2) Jon something. Perhaps Pinetti. Did the Chinese Buffet, All You Can Eat routine. "You been here 4 hour!! Leave NOW!" Also did a skit about the music as Indian restaurants. How could anyone eat to such a screaming racket? Big guy, short dark hair.

3) No clue on the name here. He was a ventriloquist. Had 3 puppets I can remember off-hand. One was a goofy alien type puppet, by the name of Peanut. "Hey Peanut, you lost a shoe! No I didn't, I found one!!" Another puppet was a crabby old man. Always sneered and made sarcastic comments to the audience. Hilarious when he did the greeting card routine. Last one I remember was the Jalapeno on a stick. "Oh no senor...don't put me back in the box. Why not? Afraid of the dark? No senor....cockroach....on a stick" LMAO!

Okay, that's all the brain picking I can handle for one night. Any help with those names would be appreciated!

Mimi 🙂

George Carlin has always been my favorite. I'm also partial to Denis Leary, and I still miss Sam Kinison.😎

I'll never forget seeing Bobcat live in California quite a few years back. Anyone who starts his show with "AAAAGGGHHHHH....I"VE NEVER MASTURBATED IN MY LIFE!!!!" has got to be ok.

For me it has to be....

Lenny Bruce and Bill Hicks....who said i was anti American???

denis leary
chris rock
tommy davidson
george carlin
and there was this one dude i saw on comedy central not too long ago...i wish i knew his name cause he was one of the funniest people i`ve seen in a while!

i like Bill Cosby to. growing up i remember listening to him on albums that my dad had...his skit on noah's ark was one of the funniest things i've ever heard.
i see no one has mentioned Steve Martin..he was off the wall..but in a humorous way.

As far as pure stand up comics, I'd have to go with:

Bill Hicks
Denis Leary
Sam Kinison

Yes, there's a definite trend there. I think that anger, when focused and channeled properly, can be extremely funny.

My favorites (in no particular order)....

Chris Rock,
Chris Tucker,
Richard Jeni,
D.L. Hughley,
Bill Maher (off-and-on),
George Carlin,
and.....
Dubya 🙄

😛

When it comes to stand-up comedy, I like Bill Cosby, Woody Allen, Jerry Seinfeld, and Steve Martin (there ya go Prime 😉 ). I would include Henny Youngman on this list save for the fact that I've seen far too little of him. I defintely much prefer skit comedy to stand-up. For me, Monty Python's Flying Circus is the funniest stuff I've ever seen. Charlie Chaplin and the Marx Brothers were hilarious, and a lot of the SCTV alumni (Martin Short, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, John Candy, Harold Ramis, Dave Thomas, etc.) and SNL alumni were really funny, too. Two comedians who really didn't do it for me were Andrew Dice Clay and Tim Allen. I remember seeing Tim Allen's stand-up routine several times (it was always the same) before he hit it big, and I couldn't believe it when they gave him his own show.

Favorites:

Bill Cosby. His "Himself" concert film was one of my favorite movies growing up. I made it a point to track down every album of his I could find. Deeply influential to my developing psyche.

Bill Hicks. Deeply cerebral about lowbrow topics. Worth a thousand Bob Sagets. Tragically, he recorded all of his best stuff knowing that he was dying of cancer. He has a scathing bit about Rush Limbaugh's sexuality that makes me crack up even though I'm a Conservative, so that's talent. His phrase "I'm proud of that little bit of Dark Poetry" has become a staple of my lexicon.

Steven Wright. Not so much a stnd-up comic as a stand-up surrealist.

The Amazing Jonathan.
Dennis Leary
Dennis Miller
Larry Miller
Dave Atell
Dave Chapelle
Elvira Kurt
The Late Dennis Wolfberg

Mimi, I believe you're thinking of Jon Pinochet (A former referee for a cheap lady wrestling show, I think) and ventriloquist Jeff Dunham. I can't narrow down Bobby's last name, but I know who you're talking about. I love his bit about the horror that resulted from getting drunk and feeding his dog salsa sauce.

Least favorite: Whoopi Goldberg. A magnificent actress, both serious and comic, but a less-than effective stand-up. She's really performing a one-woman show, and the preachiness overwhelms the humor too often. You just don't do five minutes of the airheaded valley girl character to get the audience laughing and then sucker-punch them with talking about a botched back-alley abortion. It simply isn't cricket.

best comedians? man, i have a lot.

1)Chris Tucker
2)Martin Lawrence
3)Eddie Griffin
4)Bernie Mac
5)Eddie Murphy
6)Chris Rock
7)Steve Harvey
8)Cedric the entertainer
9)Richard Pryor
10)Sinbad
11)Bill Cosby
12)Jim Carrey
i could go on and on....

OH YEAH PRIMETIME!! Sinbad!! He belongs on my list too! I forgot all about him. Man he's funny! "It's your Momma's hand man!! Drop the butt and ruuuuuuuuuun!" LMAO!

Mimi 🙂

Yes, that Eddie Izzard IS the funniest man out there these days. Check him out if you haven't yet, he's the new Robin Williams.

(Just like Clive Barker was the new Stephen King -- until he turned all softie-fantasy-head)

Meanwhile, Robin Williams is touring again! He just came through LA for a 2-night engagement at Universal! I found out about it too late though. Heard he was as hysterical and rapid-fire as ever. Man, he was my idol growing up. Mork & Mindy was like church to me, and his stand-up albums were the scripture. In 7th grade, I even wore the suspenders and beige baggy chinos to school! Often! Okay, color me dorky.

But I'm cool these days, I swear. 🙂

Boomtown calling Orson, come in Orson. Boomtown calling Orson, come in your Fatitude.

Usually no one's ever heard of my fave comedians-my hubby and I are huge stand-up fans, we used to frequent the Comedy Cellar in the village and see people that had us on the floor rolling-then we never saw them again, except maybe for one set on comedy central. But, here's my list of all time favorites, in no order:

Mitch Hedberg. "wearing a turtleneck is like bein' choked by a really weak guy. ALL DAY.
A turtleneck and a backpack is like fighting a weak midget."

Greer Barnes. His riff on getting high with his buddies and trying to find the Keebler Elves in Central Park trees will injure you from laughing. "We don't want no trouble Mr. Elf, just give up the cookies...."

Emo Philips. 'Nuff said.

Pablo Fransisco. Too much to try to pick something.

Lewis Black. Gonna see him next month, got my tickets, life is good.

I also love Denis Leary and Bernie Mac, and very early Richard Pryor.
