Biggest punch in gut as a fan of your sport/team

Ok, so I stole this thread from a hockey forum I frequent, but I figured I'd widen the topic to just any sport and post it here.

What was the biggest punch in the gut to you as a sports fan?

Me, I have a crapload. Most of mine are from different levels of international play (all hockey though, since that's the only sport I watch), but as a fan of my hockey team Leksand in the Swedish second-tier league, it was probably when Ed Belfour signed with us for the 07/08 season. I was super stoked and thought we had a chance to get promoted to the top division by the end of the season, but it turned out Belfour thought he had signed up for a beer league and our then 19-year-old second keeper both ended up playing more games during the regular season, but he also out-shined Belfour most of the time and ended the season with a better saves %. Saddest part was, they still went for "The Eagle" in the "playoffs" (read: promotion league), and he ended up being really shaky and didn't win us any games like all the fans had hoped at the start of the season. 🙁 We still haven't managed to get promoted, by the way. :cry1:

And maybe I have an obsession with goalies, but this is my worst memory from international play:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpE1zc_zZEY

After a strong start in the 2002 Olympics where we for example beat gold medalists Canada in the preliminary round with 5-2, we get eliminated by fucking Belarus in the quarter finals after a really weak game by our goalie Tommy Salo. I was 13 when this happened and I still fucking hate that asshole. <_<

This moment from the 2003 World Championship kinda stung too though:

I would have been fine with Canada winning the final (they are undisputably the best hockey nation in the world, and there's no shame in losing to the very best), but to lose in overtime because of such a crap goal... I still don't think you can tell for sure that the puck was in either, even though it probably was with 95% certainty, but man... that was terrible. It was half an inch at most that settled it, and that's no way to lose a final in ANY sport. It took me years to get over. lol.

Carsomyr a fan of hockey! Last year I followed the Flyers, they had a good run. This year I am following the Rangers, Devils and Islanders... Do you remeber Kjell Samuelsson from Sweeden? When he played with the Rangers (who at the time were a soft team) and at the time, my team, he threw one or two body checks a year. When he went to the Flyers (which were a physical team) he hit everybody in sight. He was about 6' 6", 260 and could skate for a big player. I always hated him for this.

lol, well I recognize the name, but I think I was 10 when he retired, so his heydays were kinda "before my time", so to speak. 🙂 I've never seen him play, either, but I can understand your frustration about something like that! :O

Well I am not a hockey fan, but as a basketball fan the biggest punch in the guy was when the Miami Heat, my favorite sports team traded Tim Hardaway, my favorite player. As a Miami Dolphins fan....oh geez, probably Ricky Williams retiring, passing on Brady Quinn, Matt Ryan, and Ted Ginn dropping two touchdown passes vs. the Colts.

One of the most (unfortunately) memorable was when Mike Mussina left the Orioles to sign with the Yankees in the late 90s. Certainly left a real bad taste in the mouths of baseball fans in Baltimore, and marked the beginning of the 13 year slide.

Another would be the carousel of NFL teams that feigned interest in moving to Baltimore, without a realisitc shot of that happening. This hit its peak when Paul Tagliabue awarded an expansion team to Carolina and then took the coward's way off the podium by announcing that the other team would be determined at a later date. This cemented that Baltimore would not be one of those cities, despite having the best deal on the table.

Honorable mention goes to the Colts skipping town in the middle of the night, though I was only 5 years old at the time. Therefore it had no emotional impact on me, though I cannot imagine how heartbroken this city must have been. I'm glad I was not old enough to understand, but I certainly do now.

Machida and St.Pierre losing....glad I am not the only MMA fan here....:rockingout:

Oh I forgot the Monday night melt down, when the Dolphins were ahead by 30
points in the 4th quarter and lost in overtime....that was a huge punch in the gut....:megafail:

Well lets see here...being a Washington Fan there are many many moments that I can choose from....why don't I go by team and see what I can come up with?

Capitals: Almost embodies this whole thread, as I could go on and on about the gut punches that they have given me. But I think the one gut punch above all others was losing to Montreal in game 7 last season, hell you can still see my reactions to that loss here if you search deep enough. That was just the one game where I just wanted to crawl into a lonely corner and wish it was all a dream....I'm not even exaggerating about it.

Redskins: Two moments more than anything really stand out to me...one on field, one off field. On field was the divisional playoffs in 1999 when they blew a 13-0 lead to the Bucs to lose 14-13, and wound up losing on a bad snap by Dan Turk....it makes it tragic when you know that Turk died that December from Testicular cancer, and that botched snap was his final NFL play.
Off Field:....Sean Taylor's death...that was just..one of the saddest days I think I've ever had to deal with in my life, that a player that was just finally starting to play at an elite level was just cut down in his prime. That defense has never been the same since his death...

Nationals: Since the team is so young...it can only be one thing...Strasburg's injury, I've never been more excited for someone like this before and after his debut there was nothing to say that excitement was unwarranted. But as August came and then the injury occured....I still hoped that it was nothing a little rest would take and he'd be ready next season....but instead those two words "Tommy John" had to be said and here we are now waiting for 2012...makes it worse working in a sporting goods store since we ordered SO MANY Strasburg tshirts and jerseys..that now those things are only gonna sit there until April 2012.

Wizards I can't name cause we'd be here all day, same goes for college hoops.

2006-2007 NBA Playoffs: The Dallas Mavericks the number one seed in the west 67-15 one of the best teams in the west, and not only did the Golden State Warriors laugh at them, but they knew the second they got the 8th seed in the west, they had the Mavericks beat and six games later it was done.

2007 NFL Playoffs: 13-3 and primed for a rematch against the New England Patriots, the Dallas Cowboys got bounced right out thanks to stupid mistakes and the New York Giants taking full advantage of them.

Three. Two postseason ones, and a departure.

I'm an Atlanta Braves fan, btw, for those who may not know.

Game Seven, 1991 World Series, when the Braves lost to the Minnesota Twins, in the bottom of the tenth inning, in one of the best World Series ever played. I was heartsick that they had gone from worst to first that year, and could not win the World Series.

1996 World Series: When the Braves lost four straight games, including three straight in Atlanta, after winning the first two games in NY against the Yankees handily. After those first two games, I thought the Braves were going to defend the championship they had won the year before.

When Tom Glavine left the Braves for the rival New York Mets, after the 2002 season. This hurt for two reasons. A. I could not understand why he was leaving a team, that had won eleven straight division titles to that point, to go to one that had finished in last place in the NL East in 2002. Second, the Mets are my archrival team. I have always disliked them. Leaving the Braves, to go to the Mets, made Glavine a traitor, in my mind.

Biggest punch in the gut?

Well I am a Cleveland sports fan, so I'd have to say pretty much the last 40 years.

Ugh. Where to start?

As a Husker football fan, this past season's penalty disparity. We've had one crew do three of our conference games, and we've been penalized 32 times in those games (16 in just one), compared to 9 from the other three teams combined (one of which is the fifth most penalized in the nation). The other three conference games, we've had 16 penalties compared to 17 by the other teams combined. The reason? Nebraska is leaving the Big XII conference on rather unhappy terms, and the last thing the conference wants is to see us leave with that trophy.

As a Dallas Cowboys fan...the start to this season. We were supposed to be Super Bowl contenders, and started 1-7. Hopefully Garrett can right the ship. Oh, and the December/January meltdowns we patented since 1997.

Can't believe I forgot to mention the infamous Jeffrey Maier incident, though it's hard to blame a 12-year old kid who was excited about getting a souveneir. Rich Garcia blew that call in a most horrendous way.

:imthedj::imthedj::imthedj: Poor Leon Lett, who was a good defensive player but he is well know for two of the best follies of all time....idk what is worst...Jim Marshall's wrong way fumble or his TWO bad plays...

There's no way that Leon's mistakes top what Jim Marshall did. He ran to the wrong endzone. Who does that?

It actually did matter. We don't own the Super Bowl record for points because of that play.

HA!

Yeah , living in Buffalo , gluestick & I have plenty of big gut-punching moments to last us a lifetime or two.

But Scott Norwood's 'Wide Right' in Super Bowl XXV is the biggest.

Ouch.
