Ok y'all, I'm kind of a geek but not an idustry geek (and I mean that as a compliment, honestly!) but what the heck is bluetooth? I have it on my cell (the manual is no help) and hear about it on comercials all the time. Can someoen explain to me in layman's terms, what this thing is and why we're supposed to get excited about it? TIA!

XOXO

Hi Steph, I believe Bluetooth means wireless. With Bluetooth you can have a wireless headset, wireless headphones to listen to the radio on your phone, connect to your computer, play online games with other people! I hope I helped a little!

It is one of many wireless formats out there, and is quite possibly the most common. It is often mentioned in reference to mobile phones, although that is not the only place it is found. Bluetooth works by sending data in a similar fashion to the way a radio sends signals, albeit in a much more portable form. Devices use it to send and recieve communications including phone conversations from the cellular phone to a bluetooth-capable headset and laptops recieving a connection to the internet over it.

Thanks friends~Dan pretty much told me the same thing. I guess I was just taking my super clear headset for granted! :wavingguy

XOXO

You can also use something like a PDA or a computer with bluetooth to surf the web over your cell phone (during unlimited hours I hope!)

Bluetooth is very similar to the more common form of wireless communications for internet tranfer (often referred to as WiFi, or 802.11a/b/g) in that it's a medium to digitally transfer information without having to be plugged into anything. However, unlike the 802.11 standards, it's an encrypted signal (in most cases) and will only functions with it's assigned equipment. Where a wireless 802.11G broadband router (used for cable/DSL internet customers) would transmit an unencrypted, universal signal (able to be picked up and read by any wireless reciever), a BlueTooth device sends an encoded stream of data to only the equipment that it's "friends" with, so to speak, making it more secure and less sucseptible to interference.
