I am going to get a broadband router near the end of August and I was wondering for those who have 1 or more what would you suggest? does yours also function as a hardware firewall too?
Plain ol' routers are pretty much all the same except for whether they're 10Mbps or 100 Mbps AFAIK. Most routers are firewalls, but honestly just being behind the router is mostly enough. What's more important than the router having a firewall is you having a software firewall installed (like zonealarm or sygate) to stop outgoing stuff. What do you mean by broadband router anyway, like with a cable or DSL modem built in? Not sure how much more it costs but if its more than the seperate pieces it ain't worth it.
Nah, youse got your broadband modem, and youse got your router, see? You can get them all in one, like putting a scanner and a fax machine together or whatever, but you don't have to do that.
I'm kind of partial to the Cisco 7500 series. But that's a little overkill. I have a small Linksys router with a 4-port ethernet hub built into it. It worked great for me, but it did not have a built-in firewall. I use Zone-alarm for that. I understand that Linksys has been bought out by Cisco, so more's the better.
