If you were building an nfl team from scratch and you got to chose one offensive and one defensive player who would they be

offensive- Andre Johnson

Defensive- Troy Polamalu

Matt Ryan

Mario Williams
(Casserly looks like a genius for drafting him now)

A good running back will make up for a sub-par QB.

So if we are looking at today's NFL, I would go with Adrian Peterson on offense.

Defense, a little harder, but it seems a good pass rusher would be in order so I would go with Harrison from the Steelers.

All-time:
Still a running back, and I would go with Jim Brown.

Defense I would go with Mike Singletary.

Rob

With today's players it would be a toss-up for me on offense between Peyton Manning and Tom Brady... but I'd end up taking Brady I think...

On defense, I'd pick between Patrick Willis (who I think is the next Ray Lewis) or Albert Haynesworth... Since I believe a good defense starts in the middle, I'd build it through Haynesworth first.

If I could have any players in history, I'd really have to go with Joe Montana and Bruce Smith...

Current players:
Offense -- Brian Westbrook
Defense -- James Harrison

All-time:
Offense -- Barry Sanders
Defense -- Lawrence Taylor

In theory you'd want to build from the 'trenches'

So my picks would be:

Offense: Steve Hutchinson
Defense: Albert Haynesworth/Kevin Williams
(whoever passes the physical 😀)

But seeing as how playmakers WIN the game (in theory) my picks would be:

Offense: Peyton Manning
Defense: Troy Polamalu

really you guys are picking manning? you would only get him for 2-3years he isnt going to be around that much longer

Offense -- Brian Westbrook
I came very close to picking Westbrook. It was a hard choice for me but I went with Peterson.

Offense -- Barry Sanders
Defense -- Lawrence Taylor
Damn. Great picks. I may have to rethink mine.

I think everyone is picking off of thoughts of drafting them in their prime, or in the first few years of their career. I think there would be different picks if there was a stipulation on your picking them to start your own franchise today with how they are playing today and at their current age and health.

Gotcha. Well my picks wouldn't change.

Hope you didn't mind me adding in my all-time franchise starters.

IMO, a good team usually has a solid, if not great QB.

Manning is arguably the highest-IQ QB to ever play the game.

His stats and play have been consistent and/or great since day 1.

Can you name me 3 QB's under age 27 who are better and/or as consistent as Manning?

Big Ben...? Wins games, but has been so-so since injury.

Rivers...? Solid, but has never won anything (same with Romo, who's also a choker)

Eli...? Throws picks, inconsistent...

Matt Ryan is a rook.

Manning is the QB of choice.

You could go RB, but even the greatest RB EVER, Barry Sanders, never won anything without a good QB.

If I went RB I'd probably pick AP.

All-time would be:

Montana and LT.

Peyton is only 32. I think he'll be at the top of his game 4-5 more years.

i dunno lately he looks older to me, he seems like he is slowly becoming more of a game manager and it doesnt help that the talent around him is letting him down, i wouldnt be suprised to see him leave in a few years because this is dungy's last year and peyton will have to learn a brand new system and hes already got a superbowl and he isnt the kind of guy who will like a transition he wants to win now

not at all good idea actually, all time mine would be

offense- barry sanders .. because there are a lot of great quarterbacks but never another running back like barry

defense- deacon jones

Your Barry Sanders pick along with another person's is really making me rethink my Jim Brown.

But I must applaud your Deacon Jones pick. Although with your Steeler love I thought you might have gone with "Mean" Joe Green.

Either way, very nice pick.

He looks 'older' because he had knee surgery (MCL) and missed the pre-season.

Also, Jeff Saturday and Tony Ugoh (among others on the OL) have been injured off and on all year long.

All things considered, he's still a top-5 QB this year.

i know he had knee surgery, i watch football (obviously) and the o line doesnt make the quarterback .. the team doesnt need to be good for the qb to be look at rivers.. just his throws, his demeanor on the sidelines, and his post game interviews .. he just looks tired to me.. and yes i agree he is still a top 5 qb this year he is probaly top 3

Tell that to David Carr. 😀

True, but I'd take Elway over Marino any day of the week, too. For obvious reasons.

I agree Rivers is good and promising, but he has yet to reach Peyton-like levels (of stats and/or winning).

If and when he throws for 49 TDs, wins 12+ games for 5 straight years and wins a SB, then I'll take him.

Then consider that Peyton has MADE the Colts what they are.

Rivers already had LDT to help him and he STILL can't win yet.

i dont think that manning made the colts i think manning is more or less a system qb.. hes good i just dont think he is as good as the system makes him look

Considering the Colts had only 5 winning seasons from 1980-1997 (before Manning was drafted) and 9 in 10 years since (including a SB and 5 straight 12 or more W seasons and counting) ... I'd have to disagree.

He threw 26 TD's his rookie season under Mora while throwing to the likes of Ken Dilger and Sean Dawkins.

And the only reasons I take him over Brady (and every other RB) is because:

a. I hate Brady and the Pats.
b. Brady just suffered a career-altering injury.
c. RB's break down faster than QB's; can be easier to defend/develope a D gameplan against.

Peyton has had at least 4 different RB's over his career (Faulk, Edge, Rhodes, Addai) but the Colts keep winning regardless of who he hands the ball off to.

He's not a 'system QB'.

He's just damned fantastic.

Dungy will be replaced by one of their current assistant coaches, so I doubt he'll have to worry about an overhaul of their offensive system.

Speaking of "building a franchise", I believe one of the best GMs ever built the talent on the Colts team... Bill Polian.

He drafted Manning... among others that have made them great over the years... and just to prove it wasn't a fluke, he's also the guy who built those Buffalo Bills teams that went to 4 straight Super Bowls...

Granted, the Bills never won one, but were chocked full of HOFers... and I find this Colts franchise to be eerily similar in the way they are set up talent and coaching wise.
