Its something that I keep seeing, and I dont understand why this is such a big deal. There are numerous file conversion apps on the web, and probably twice as many tutorials on how to do it. Also, there is a free media player for every file format. Yet I continuously see "someone convert this to wmv" or "why cant you make this 'insert someone's favorite format' here."

I understand that some of us arent that computer savvy. But I assure you all, setting up an account here was almost as hard as converting an avi file to wmv with the same Movie Maker program that comes with every Windows machine. Its only hard if you never try, and once you do you will be mad you have been waiting the extra 36 hours for Rajee or someone else to do it. Or download the player that can play the format...its just as easy.

coulda sworn this was stickied already..people still wont listen lol

This post doesn't have a clip inside of it. If you're such a stickler for forum post rules, why would you post this in the wrong section of the forums?

This post doesn't have a clip inside of it.

With all due respect...Search my posts; the majority them have clips. Check youtube for all my clips that everyone else posts, with my screen name still in them. 10 years and counting bro...I have provided enough clips for everyone a few times over. But since you want an explanation, let me break it down for you.

a. Since this would be where the said clips are posted, this is where I see the said requests. Sure, I could post this somewhere else, but then again...maybe the people making the requests wouldnt read it. I know they would read it here.

b. I honestly didnt realize it was already stickied. If I had known, I would have done something like this:

Is this too hard to follow....please read #2. Thanks. Your friend, Keith. 🙂

I honestly thought I was being polite the way originally requested this. If anyone found this insulting or took it personally, I apologize. Hell, I have an Inbox. If you need assistance on how to download the proper player or assistance in converting a clip, let me know and I will help. But I see no reason why someone should have to do 2-4 conversions on a clip. Its one thing to do a favor, but shit...the favor has been done. The clip was provided, and all you have to do is download. You dont even have to acknowledge the download with a thanks...just download. Is it really necessary to follow it with "OMG!!11 Can someone convert this?" That question is rhetorical; of course it isnt necessary. In fact, its the equivelant of being given free steak and saying "Next time cook it longer, I like it well done."

And again, if clip conversion or clip player downloads really have you twisted in knots, I will be more than happy to assist anyone.

Who cares. Sometimes people actually listen and end up converting the clip in question. . . so, we end up with a nice little wmv without having to move our asses. Sounds like a good deal to me.

There are already several stuck threads addressing this...

What do you care if people ask for another format though?

ohai

could i possibly get this thread in a different format??...this html thing just isn't doing it for me....kthx

SORRY I COULDN'T RESIST! you are awesome though dajerx and your maximum clippage. DAJERX FTW! <3

What do you care if people ask for another format though?

Why did you make it a rule not to? There was clearly something about it that made you feel strong enough to request it not be done.

...but you know what? It really isnt my place to point it out. If the people that keep doing the conversions dont care, and obviously the people making the requests are happy with things, then truthfully I shouldnt have let it bother me. People should know their proper places, and clearly I overstepped mine when requesting that people actually follow along with one of only 4 things you ask of people in here. Lesson learned.

As for why I care....I think this summed it up quite nicely:

Converting from, say, realplayer to Windows Media is nearly impossible and requires some pretty specific tools, and it's not something that just anyone can do on a whim. Most times people are posting clips that they happen to have, not ones that they made themselves. It would be FAR easier for you to get the right player than it would be for someone else to convert the clip, so take that step and find the player you need to play the clips that you want to see.

My apologies again....thats 2 apologies in this thread.

:roflmao:

My perfect solution is to ignore people who ask for different formats...Darwinism is a beautiful thing :manicd:

On many forums where files are usually hundreds of megs big, it's usually considered rude if you ask for a different file format, or a different file host.
Here, since files are usually smaller, it's not so big of a deal...but mildly irritating when it is so easy to google a codec pack these days 🙂

You still miss the basic point of what I was saying.

How do you expect anybody else to listen to you, and cease breaking the rules, when you BREAK THE RULES TO TELL THEM!?.

Doesn't make any sense to me.

And I don't care if you follow the rules 99% of the time. You didn't this time.

And furthermore, if you've been posting for 10 years...how did you miss the sticky in the first place?

In other words...people need to quit complaining about people who complain about requesting file formats...right?lol

There are always gonna be newbies asking those questions simply because not everyone will read the stickies. I doubt I have even read them all. I suppose the best answer for those questions is "(username), please read the sticky threads and you will find all the answers you ever need."

Of course my thoughts are that MPC, VLC, and DownloadHelper for Firefox are the answer to everything.

dajerx, your username is preceded by its reputation--I know I have seen it many time over the years and I thank you for your ten years of contributions.

Of course my thoughts are that MPC, VLC, and DownloadHelper for Firefox are the answer to everything.

I used DownloaderHelper successfully for quite awhile, but through periodic updates it eventually stopped working properly and began causing serious issues with more fundamental Firefox functions and extensions/plugins, until it eventually caused Firefox to crap out completely and I couldn't get the browser to work at all until uninstalling DLH and reinstalling Firefox "from scratch." I've read similar complaints from others who also eventually had to disable or uninstall it in order to get their browser to work properly.

Firefox can be a great browser when everything's working properly, but unfortunately, with so many different people creating various extensions and plugins for it, it seems quite prone to compatibility issues.

As for the main topic of this thread, one thing that bothers me personally more than requests is complaints. Requests are very easy to ignore if one can't or doesn't want to comply with them. Complainers however, seem to post longer and "louder", making their posts somwhat harder to ignore, although usually seeming to be little but "obsessing" over the pettiest things, making me think some may take this forum a little too seriously.
