What is a better disc drive to buy for a pc?

cd-rom or dvd-rom

Also, what speed?

cd-rom

it'll prevent your computer from being able to read those vile dvd formats as they are filled to the brim with evil !

roffle @ ori

DVD drives have an advantage over CD drives that instantly makes them the best: they can nearly always real all or most CD types out there as well as several DVD types. In short, with CD-ROM, you are limited to CDs, but with DVD-ROM, you get both CDs and DVDs.

Speed, unless you mean recording/writing speed, doesn't matter in any drive. SImply get the fastest that you can get, the drive will adjust to the best setting for what you put in it.

depends, what do you have more use for

cdrom for mainly data saving or a dvdrom for reading movies and also for larger data storage

Id suggest lookin for a dvd burner\reader. It will also work as a cd rom

Don't most newer computers come with a combo drive that has both? My laptop does. Its also CD-RW, etc inabled. The desktop I used to have also had both so I'm certain both have them thesedays.

A DVD burner.
And a backup DVD reader [if they still sell them] or a CD reader for progs with nasty protection protocols.

I would strongly recommend a DVD burner over any other type of drive because of its far greater data storage capacity and its ability to read most optical disks.

And a DVD Rom too... if you can spare the money.

[I'd rather skip lunch than go without backup hds...]

oh im just going to use it for gaming. trying to configure a new pc. Yeah i was refering to the speed of the drive itself. On the list of configurations it says "16x dvd drive or a 48x cd-rom". Thanks guys on the advise. Im not really into burning cd as kazaa is spyware hell. So I guess I can skip on the cd burner.

Nope, you can't skip on burning capabilities.
Even if you shun Kazaa. 😉

[And even then, there is Kazaa Lite, out there, I heard...]

Kazaa Lite all the way, baby!
If you're getting a drive for gaming you'll want a DVD as the better games are going to be on that format.

I use a burner for data backup only and have been very glad on many occasions to have had those backup CDs 🙂

DVD-drive that can burn and read DVDs and CDs... I mean:
One drive to rule them all. If you'll get both in one. The only downside is that it costs a bit. Have one myself.

A costly alternative to burning to cd is using older HDs.
It's something I had to do myself.

I recently bought a dvd-r. it wasn't the cheapest out there but it was only $60 and with it I can burn cds, any type of DVDs, double layer DVDs, read CDs, and read DVDs. it's not a huge expense for something that can do everything.

If you don't trust Kazaa, there is always bittorrent 😀 😀 😀 .........
And even if it is just for gaming, I'd go with the DVD-R, you never know when it might come in handy...
And if you do get the cd-rom, a 48x would be great(and this is the one you say is available so the rest of this paragraph is probably useless, but anyway), a 52x also great, but I'd pass up any 56x cd-rom, I don't know the brand or series they would give you, but some of the 56x drives have presented info skipping problems, BENQ 56x drives had that problem that I know off...

DVD gooooooood......

Im probably going to go with what ness and celtic said about a combo drive. I guess somewhere down the line Im going to burn dance mix cds.
