Here is a new question:
Joe pitched a complete game victory for the home team last night, throwing 121 pitches in a 9-inning 5-3 win.
Sam, on the visiting team, swung and missed at Joe's 81st, 82nd, and 83rd pitches, but Sam did not strike out. (The catcher did NOT drop the ball on the 83rd pitch.) How is this possible?

Nope, it could just as well have been the 44th, 45th, and 46th pitches (or almost any three consecutive pitches).

Here is the solution.
Sam came to bat in the top of the 6th inning with two outs and a runner on first base. Joe threw his 81st pitch and Sam swung and missed. Joe threw his 82nd pitch and Sam swung and missed. The runner took off for second base and was thrown out by the catcher, ending the top of the 6th inning.

When Sam came to bat leading off the top of the 7th inning, his at-bat having been interrupted by the fact that the runner was caught stealing, he began with a fresh count of 0 balls and 0 strikes. He swung at and missed Joe's 83rd pitch of the night. He flew out to right field on Joe's 84th pitch. 😀

It is based on the fact that when an inning ends in the middle of an at-bat because a base runner is picked off or caught stealing, then the same batter whose at-bat was interrupted by the ending of that inning leads off the next inning for his team, and begins with a count of 0 balls and 0 strikes, regardless of what the count was when his at-bat was interrupted.
