When I was a kid, I had a small picture book that told a story about a bunch of little animals who lived in a small clearing in the middle of a forest. They led a happy life there, until one afternoon, when a bear lumbered into the clearing. The small critters were all frightened of the bear (with good reason), so when they saw it, they all scurried up into the trees. The bear wandered around a little, found a comfortable spot, and laid down there for a nap. After a few hours, the bear woke up, and wandered away. It wasn't until the bear was gone that the small residents of the clearing felt safe enough to come back down out of the trees. "Whew, I'm glad he's gone," they all said.

But the next afternoon, the bear came back to the clearing. Again, all the little creatures who lived there had to go up into the trees for safety. Again, the bear laid down and napped for a few hours, trapping the poor little residents up in the trees, until he woke up and left.

Day after day, it was the same thing. "What are we going to do," wondered the little critters. "We can't live like this!"

One day, as the bear lay sleeping, one of the squirrels watched from a nearby tree. "I guess I'll either have to find a new home, or just spend every afternoon sitting in this tree," he lamented to himself. Just then, he noticed a caterpillar had started crawling across the bear's foot. The bear suddenly snorted and giggled in his sleep, and twitched his foot to shake the caterpillar off. "Hey," thought the squirrel, "the bear is ticklish! That gives me an idea!"

Later, after the bear had awakened and left for the day, the squirrel gathered all his friends together and explained his plan. All the critters agreed that it was worth a try, and excitedly ran off to gather long, leafy branches, just as the squirrel had instructed.

The next day, all the little creatures were waiting in the trees with their branches, even before the bear arrived. And then, right on schedule, the bear sauntered into the clearing, found his favorite spot, and laid down for his afternoon nap. Once the bear dozed off, the squirrel gave his signal, and all the critters slowly lowered their branches toward the bear. Soon, the tips of all the branches were poised in position, only an inch away from the bear, hovering over every part of his body. Then, the squirrel said "Go!" and all at once, they began to tickle the bear!

The bear awoke with a start, and immediately began laughing and thrashing about. He was suddenly being tickled everywhere! He tried to turn away from the tickling branches, but as he covered up one ticklish spot, he would expose several others, and the little creatures would simply move their branches to tickle the newly exposed spots!

They tickled him everywhere! On his feet, on his toes, on his belly, on his nose... his ears, his back, his sides, his neck... everywhere! "Don't stop!" shouted the squirrel. "Keep tickling!"

After a while, the bear just wanted to run away, but they were tickling him so much, and he was so weak with laughter, that all he could do was roll around on the ground, still laughing, and hoping that they would stop soon. But the squirrel again shouted, "Don't stop! Keep tickling!"

Finally, with one great effort, the bear heaved himself onto his feet and ran away! And he was never seen in that clearing again!

The End 🙂 I don't have the book anymore; I think my mom threw it away when she realized I was getting off on it. ;p I don't remember the title, either. But it's a cherished childhood memory from the days long before the internet, when this was the closest thing to tickle-porn that a young boy could get his hands on in the American suburbs!

Sounds like Bear Trouble

That sounds like Bear Trouble by Lilian Moore, illustrated by Kurt Werth.

Supposedly there's a short film based on it as well.

Thanks to the tip from lkr13331, I was able to locate a copy of the book. We are reunited after four decades!
