Associated Press SHORT HILLS, N.J. -

Dana Reeve, who fought for better treatments and possible cures for paralysis through the Christopher Reeve Foundation, named for her late actor-husband, has died, the foundation said. She was 44.

Reeve died Monday of lung cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Medical Center, said Sean Dougherty, a spokesman for the foundation.

"We are extremely saddened by the death of Dana Reeve, whose grace and courage under the most difficult of circumstances was a source of comfort and inspiration to all of us," Kathy Lewis, president and CEO of the foundation, said in a statement.

Reeve won worldwide admiration for her support of her husband, the one-time Hollywood "Superman" turned activist for spinal cord research after a horse-riding accident in 1996.

She served as chairwoman of the Christopher Reeve Foundation and founded the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Resource Center.

Christopher Reeve died in 2004. In August, Dana Reeve announced she had been diagnosed with lung cancer. She said she had never smoked.

She said in November that said she was able to keep her spirits up because she "had a great model. ... I was married to a man who never gave up."

Reeve lived in Westchester County, near New York, with the couple's teenage son, Will. She has appeared on Broadway, off-Broadway and regional stages and on the TV shows "Law & Order," "Oz," and "All My Children."

"Dana will always be remembered for her passion, strength and ceaseless courage that became her hallmark," Lewis said. "Along with her husband, Christopher, she faced adversity with grace and determination, bringing hope to millions around the world."

She is survived by her father, Dr. Charles Morosini; sisters Deborah Morosini and Adrienne Morosini Heilman; two stepchildren, Matthew and Alexandra; and her son.

At least they are together again and taking long walks together I would imagine!

I can't remember, they had children did they not?

How sad for them...

Pretty lady. How can you get lung cancer without smoking? Same thing happened to Andy Kaufman. At the risk of sounding callous maybe shes better off in the great beyond with her husband. :wiseowl:

Christopher really was a Super-man, and he was blessed for having a wife that never left his side in the most difficult times. May she find peace at his side again. :dropatear

This is absolutely tragic. It breaks my heart to think two people who devoted their lives to helping others and making life better for so many could both be taken so young and so unfairly. Their poor children....

I totally agree Mimi! Times like this, I question the fairness of things.

the horrible irony was, that right after she was diagnosed, she said i was just beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel, thinking life would now maybe get better for her and her son. her mom had died a bit earlier of ovarian cancer. Dana said never expect life to be fair because its not...

Truly sad for us...but like a few have said already, they are back togeather.
Take heart for their children will always know the best of their parents and hw much the world loved them.
Theres a saying I tend to remember that goes like "You can tell the value of your life by those that miss you when your gone"
The Reeves were richer than they could have ever imagined.

RIP.

Absolutely sad and tragic. She was an angel. She stood by her man in his worst hour. I remember crying when her husband died. He was the pillar of strength, but she was the foundation for that strength. Now it is time to cry for the Reeves again. We could probably all live to 100 years of age and NEVER find as strong and loyal or dedicated a couple as the Reeves were. May I live life with just half their strength and I could consider myself a lucky man. Dana, I am sorry you had to go. May you reunite with your SUPERHERO. To me, you both are SUPERHEROES. Dana, may you rest in peace. :sadcry: 🙁

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Dana Reeve. What an absolute tradegy. Not only was the poor woman taken from us far too soon, at only age 44, but to think of her children, losing both their parents, at such a young age, within a relatively short time of one another. My thoughts and prayers go out to Ms Reeve's family and her children.

Dana was a beautiful woman, she will be missed. Hopefully, her work in promoting stem cell research will not die with her.

I can't believe she's gone! She was such an inspriration, actually her and Chris both were. She is with Chris now.

Christ that is sad and a shock! 🙁 Goes to show good people go young and the bad live 100 years. But like others said, at least she's with her husband now
