Clinical Psychologist Praises Tickling

But tickling, as well as touch in general, declines dramatically in middle age. People begin a gradual "tactile disengagement," according to researcher Dr. Robert Provine. Tickle, touch, and play, so critically intertwined and important to our over all sense of joy and well being, all go into retreat as we get older.

Holy shit, really???

It's true, apparently. This woman seems to be, at least to some degree, one of us. Wonder if she's a forum member. If she isnt, we should email her, and ask her to join TMF, lol.

interesting read 🙂

I hope my sensitivity doesnt fade 🙁

I don't know if it's sensitivity as much as, well, people just don't "touch" as much as you get older. Less tumbling on the grass, running around on the playground, throwing each other in the pool.

That kind of thing is healthy, you know you're happy even when you're older when you're still physical and have that kind of thing with other people, not just your spouse.

I mean when you're 12 and you're in the pool you do chicken fights and wrestle and play twister. I'm 25 and it's like people have an invisible force field around them sometimes.

Well I'm 31, and I just played Twister over the weekend!

Only it was Strip Twister. So... not quite like old times. 😀

I think this is not inevitable if you stay "tickle active". 😀

Thanks for sharing this great wonderful article. It was very interesting and fascinating to read. I was saddened that it did mention as people got older the tactile desensitization that was not fun and sad to read. But I agree with Milagros 317 don't think it is something that has to happen: guess like he said just stay tickle active and get plenty of tickles in and find what makes and keeps you really ticklish, don't think that has to happen, think it can be avoided one getting desensitized to tickling...gee I hope not... I really would hate losing my ticklishness as I get older, that would be a shame and really sad...gonna do what I can to keep my ticklishness and help my lees keep their ticklishness no matter what age that be.:rainbow::bouncybou

Holy shit, really???

This isn't necessarily true...I have recently reconnected with a friend who is 58 and has always been indifferent to tickling - that is until I told her a short time back about what an intense fetish it is for me. I got her to tie me down and she had a blast. Next thing I knew, she wanted me to tie her and now she can't get enough of it! She agrees we're never to old to learn something new. Some people just need the encouragement.

The Rhino and I beat Jo and Viper at chicken fight in the pool 😀 :typerhappy:

medical use of tickling

My son has autism, mostly sensory issues. I have done extensive research on sensory integration and virtually all occupational therapists list tickling as a form of therapy for children with sensory based autism. Children with sensory integration issues have neurological need to be over-stimulated and tickling can help that.
