What does everyone think of this? That trailer sure blew everyone away, but if it just ends up being another giant monster movie (only with jittery cameras) I think a lot of folks are gonna be disappointed.

I believe Abrams said he wanted to make an American version of Godzilla, and that King Kong was too gentle...

I've kept an eye on it since the trailer that ran in front of Transformers. I have a feeling the hype is going to end up letting a LOT of people down, but it'll probably still be a commercial success, even if it's not a critical one.

I hadn't heard of it until I saw this thread. The trailer looks interesting. Not interesting enough to get me into the theater though (then again I almost never see movies in the theater anymore.) Didn't someone already do an 'american' godzilla? The one with Matthew Broderick?

Good deal!!That looks f#*king awesome.I am a sucker for movies like that. :xpulcy:

Looks like blair witch meets the american remake of godzilla

yeah, and it was disappointing.

i am one of the many who spends a bit of his free time seeking out new info and playing the ARG that revolves around this movie. i am so into the hype, it hurts. i like what has been done with the movie and the ARG thus far, and i'm willing to bet this will be a killer film.

It's kind of funny that ethanhaas.org is a Cloverfield fan site, considering the EHWR ARG was completely unrelated to the Cloverfield project -- it was a marketing tool for Alpha Omega! Guess that's what happens when people jump to conclusions... but then again, what else is there to do with an ARG 🙂

It looks interesting, but I think "Cloverfield" is a really sucky name for a monster movie.

Please forgive my ignorance here, but what is ARG?

And why is this movie being summed up with Blair Witch?

Actually, Cloverfield isn't the name of the movie. As far as i know, the movie doesn't have a name, and for the sake of secrecy, they refer to the production as "Project Cloverfield". Incidently though, i like the name Cloverfield, but i might be biased.

As fas as this movie goes, i think the trailors have looked pretty cool, and if nothing more i will probably see this film for the concept of it alone. I think it will be rather interestting, and worth the watch. i just wonder how they will handle the huge monster concept. Ie, will it simply be one Huge monster attacking a city, will the monster be explained, will their be more monsters, etc. If they went all CoCon us with the monsters, i think that would be extremely cool.

I can;t answer the ARG question, but the reason it's being summed up with the blair witch is that the movie seems to be done all by handheld cam, done i believe by a group of friends who were previously at a going away party for a friend when things star to happen.

ARG stands for Alternate Reality Game, basically its putting you in the universe the game takes place. Or the game takes place in this universe. Either or really. As stated, the Blair Witch concept comes from the idea its on handheld cameras and gives you the exact same perspective as the characters. Its a crafty technique tbh, since whereas the audience might get a "ITS BEHIND YOU!" moment in some films, these ones mean you get the same shock the characters get. One of the reasons I REALLY liked Signs actually.

Actually, the film is being called Cloverfield now, its in reference to the name the government gives the operation/attack. The latest trailer states as much in the opening text.

The studio has released little bits of back story for the film through their teaser websites. Apparently, a Japanese company is mining some sort of material out of the sea and putting it into a slushy drink called Slusho. It's been rumored that the monster in Cloverfield has either been mutated by this stuff or was disturbed by the mining.

Then again, this could all be wrong and the monster is in fact Voltron.

Nah, if it was a licenced monster, it would HAVE to be Cthulu 😀 But JJ Abrams has stated its a completely original monster.

Ok,well, still sounds good to me, and a movie i plan on seeing.

I think its going to be pretty good... ive seen a sketch of what the monster is supposed to look like.. message me if u want the link... its pretty cool

when someone in the trailer said it looked like a lion, i thought it was Voltron.

I think thats one of the more debated quotes of the trailors. Some say the person said "It's a Lion and its huge!". Others, myself included think the actual words were "It's Alive and its huge!". From the little trailers i've seen, it doesn't look anything like a lion, so i'm assuming the second one is right.

I was unclear -- I heard Abrams wanted this monster to be an American equivalent of Godzilla. Cloverfield isn't related to that big lizard at all.

Abrams said he was in a Japanese toy shop, and he saw all the Godzilla toys, and he realized that America needed it's own giant monster, and that Kong was too gentle.

I was following the ARG for a while, but lost interest... Unless there was a lot of work put into it later, it seemed very poorly planned out (they were posting on people's websites that were getting annoyed with them). Plus, some of the things weren't working the way that they should have. There was supposed to be something going on at the Slusho(?) site, I think you were supposed to mess around with something in a certain order to get another clue, but it didn't work...

It's weird that the Ethan Haas thing turned out to be part of something else that launches on the same date. What is Alpha Omega? Is there any connection between that and Cloverfield?

A-O is a role-playing game that is set in post-apocalyptic times. The core rules book is supposed to be released...1-18-08.

The Slusho! thing you're referring to is the flavor bots. I'm not sure if there was anything to have solved in that "puzzle", but I still give it a shot from time to time. There are also MySpace pages for some of the main characters in the movie, and a few other related websites like www.tagruato.jp that all correspond with the movie.

oh yeah...and if you let your browser stay on www.1-18-08.com for 6-7 minutes, you'll get a surprise!

Hmmm... It does sound like Godzilla... I was kinda hoping for something a little more Lovecraftian.

Have you come across anything that would indicate any relationship between the movie and LOST?

On Rottentomatoes.com, they said something about a possible Cloverfield/LOST crossover. There were no further details...

I just watched the preview again and I cant wait for it to hit theatre's. :bubble:

I'm expecting a giant monster or a big twist at the end. Either way I think I'd like to see it.

I still want to see the Japanese monster movie "The Host".

yeah, you and a few dozen others. as it is, there is already a Cthulhu movie that has been released in the independent movie bracket, and it's crazy. good, but crazy.

as many people have pointed out, Godzilla, and all respective trademarks, are on hold for the next 6-8 years. no one can make a Godzilla movie until then.

the only Lost reference i and others have found IS Slusho, since it was first mentioned in the series.

as far as speculation goes, the monster is massive, and either has spawns running amok in the city, or something else is brought ashore with it. the trailer released during the showing of Beowulf gives only a brief glimpse at the creature, as one can only see it shuffling between buildings.

I hope your not talking about "Daigon". That was just a horrible movie. If you want a decent that touches on Lovecraft, and it's one of my faves,It's by John Carpenter and called "In the mouth of Madness". Good one their.
