Cloverfield...

this is going to be a great year for movies, it seems. Cloverfield, The Dark Knight, Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Hellboy 2. there's a great deal to look forward to. so far, though, Cloverfield and The Dark Knight are the only two movies (that i know of) that currently has the ARG players of the world engaged. if anything, Hellboy 2 should have one as well.

in case anyone cares, www.1-18-08.com finally released a new photo. i tells ya, this thing gets cooler by the second. i'd gladly hump a thorn bush to see this movie.

yeah, you and a few dozen others. as it is, there is already a Cthulhu movie that has been released in the independent movie bracket, and it's crazy. good, but crazy.

Ok, I've heard of Godzilla and Voltron...

WTF is Cthulhu?

I remember Metalica doing an instrumental on it but that's all I know.

Cthulhu was created by H.P. Lovecraft. He is an Elder God of immense power who sleeps in the city of R'lyeh until the stars reach the perfect alignment so that he can walk again. in the stories, his vision and power are so tremendous, that one cannot be in his presence without going mad. his visage has been described as being an immense creature, with a squid-like head and powerful limbs.

Seems like nearly every other movie has a picture of a smoky Manhattan behind a heavily damaged Statue of Liberty. :idunno:

Im interested in this movie because of the way its shot, just like its been metioned in this thread already, it much like a blair witch project and so rare do you see movies shot like that.

It definately has my interest up

I'd go mad if I saw this too.

Ahhhh...in "Master of Puppets" there is a song James Hetfield wrote called "The Thing That Should Not Be". The lyrics sound like they suggest he was writing about this as well.

heh, how could it not be? the Great Old One has inspired many songs and stories.

"Great Old One" is one of the lyrics to that song. We're definitly on the same page.

Great Old One,
Forbiddin sight,
He wakens,
Hunter of the shadows is rising,
Imortal,
In madness you dwell.

It's basically Godzilla shot Blair Witch style. I'll probably see it, but I'll reserve judgment until then. I've been psyched before by really great marketing campaigns for films which ultimately didn't deliver(like, well, Blair Witch).

indeed, friend Strider. it's only a few days away, and the anticipation is killer!

Really? I admit i was one of the people who thought that the "Blair Witch" movie was based on a real event, and it scared the hell out of me at the time. But, even though i found out that the story was bogus, i still think it's a great movie for several reasons, and it still creeps me out.

... JJ Abrams has stated its a completely original monster.
Sure it is. Lessee, big mean monster attacks NYC. Like we've never heard that before : King Kong, Godzilla, Mr. Stay Puft.

And it's (a) a huge ape/lizard/some other natural critter mutated to gigantic size, (b) a mutant chimera, (c) a genetically engineered and/or bionic monster, (d) a space alien monster, or (e) a giant robot. All of which have been done on film somewhere before (Japan would be my first choice to cover all those possibilities, with Tokyo substituting for NYC).

Copying the Blair Witch Project cinematography might give it that claustrophobic look that adds a spooky factor, something that's hard to achieve with your typical giant-monster-outdoors flick, but I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed by this hyped film that is itself a chimera of older stuff.

The only original thing I'd like to see is actors acting like real people in danger instead of like idiots because that's what the script requires.

i do not think this creature is mutated, but rather...is. a force of nature that has taken form to wreak havoc on those that would wreck it's home and ecosystem. you mentioned Kong, but he was not a mutant. he just...was.

besides, if you can name me one original idea in Hollywood, you get a gold star.

To say something in nature just ... is ... is to say nothing. Everything in nature is; that's obvious. The question is what it is.

And gravity is a force of nature. Electromagnetism is another force of nature. There are two others. To call some big ugly monster a "force of nature" is to not understand what that phrase means.

An original idea from Hollywood: The Blair Witch Project. I'll take my gold star to go. 😀

I haven't seen Cloverfield yet, I've seen a small clip that shows the creature for a few seconds, I think they're in a helicopter and they look up and the creature is standing over them. I'll just say this as to whether the creature is a sea monster or what: the movie posters and trailers say "something has found us". To me that implies it's an alien. If it has earthly origins, then it didn't have to look too hard to "find" us. Just a thought.

Ok, I've seen it

It wasn't half bad, actually. I mean, the frat-boys and frat-girls that they picked to "star" in it were typically bitchy, drunk and shallow, but it was pretty realistic. The monster was...well...interesting. Nothing was explained. It was like a cross between the new War of the Worlds, Blair Witch, and Godzilla.

OH, if you tend to get motion-sick, you might wanna stay home for this one.:xlime::xlime::xlime:
