watched pro football over thirty years and don`t think I`ve seen or heard of the rule that gave Steelers back the ball when endzone camera clearly showed Dolphins player fall on and recover the fumble

It looked to me like Miami should have been given possession as well. Hell, the Steelers had the devil's luck on their side, because that call could have easily gone the other way. It will come as no solace to Dolphins fans to know that the official who made the call is apparently a Pittsburgh native. :ermm:

They were actually following the video guideline rules. Next year they will implement a referee's decision/judgement along with replay.

Cmon slacker; you saw the video........

Yes, I did. I saw two Dolphins come down with the ball between them. Then I saw Legursky come plowing in between them both. He could have grabbed the ball just as easily as the other two. Same thing the ref saw. Therefore, inconclusive.

You and the ref saw one thing and the rest of the United States of America that watched saw something completely different.

Hey, I'm not trying to argue with you; even the Steelers can get a lucky break and a turned head every once in awhile.

Likewise. Every team is going to catch those lucky breaks here and there. Ravens got one on what could have been an offensive pass interference call on Boldin that went against Buffalo, so it happens. Not really hatin' on my part, even if I'm not exactly a Steelers fan. 😉

Honestly too many people IMHO are interpreting this all wrong. The biggest fault lies with the ref's for not explaining this properly, and the referee calling touchdown incorrectly.

When the Ref's hands went up and signaled touchdown...the play ENDED. Several Steelers had already begun to celebrate...thus not even trying to get to the ball. Now before we attempt to say "play to the whistle", when the ref signaled touchdown...that was the end of the play.

Now on to the whole ruckus, Miami could not challenge the play. Within 2 minutes of the end of each half the only replay could be done by a booth review. Since the play technically ended with the ref signaling touchdown...the fumble could not be reviewed. The only thing that could be reviewed is IF the ball crossed the endzone marker. Yes or no. Did it cross the plane of the goal or not. If the play is whistled dead, or in this case signaled dead, then like any other play the fumble can not be reviewed. It was concluded that the ball did not cross the plane...thus the correct call is Pittsburgh ball where he last had control of the ball before the fumble...because again the ball was incorrectly signaled as a touchdown, and any fumble that occurs after a play is called dead can not be reviewed. Basically it is the "down by contact" rule. But in this case it was not contact, the play was still whistled or called dead because of the touchdown being called.

The refs screwed this up. They should have said....
"There was a booth review of the previous play on whether it was a touchdown or not. By rule that is all that can be reviewed since it was signaled touchdown and the play was over at that signal. The fumble can not be reviewed. We have seen by video replay that the ball did not cross the into the endzone while the player had control or possession. Therefore the ball will be placed where the player had last control of the ball when the touchdown was signaled, and it is now 4th down."

Now, that explanation would have made more sense, and it would be following the rules.

I think the way the ref's handled it is the biggest issue and their explanation.

This may have been the worst ref'ing week in the history of the NFL

Examples
Roethlisberger dives for endzone, a ref is RIGHT infront of him, clearly able to see the ball comes out before he crosses the plane, and he rules a touchdown.
Cutler dives over the pile and the ball crosses the plane. Yes one side was blocked by defenders but even the on FIELD camera shows the ball is hitting the line, esp when one of the refs is standing ON the line, yet no td
Harvin dives for the endzone and hits the pylon, they rule TD. Despite the obvious FACT he pushes off his right foot which was out of bounds

Yes, and we need rules to enforce against the players? How about better training for refs

officiating sucks this year, look at the Minnesota/Green Bay game. Im tired of refs...theres a reason these guys wear pads, I say let them play the damn game

as a diehard steelers fan watching the game i was praying that ben crossed the line because i knew the dolphins recovred... but like the rules state the fumble could not be reviewed, right call bad rule much like the calvin johnson catch

but a win is a win is a win and ill take it

how refreshing it is for someone to be honest!!!

I'm right with Goodie. The officiating's been a crock of shit for some time now.
