Ok....

My computer keeps getting this seeve pop-up for no reason. Please let me know where I can go to clean this up.

I'm freaking out!

Sunny

HELLLLLLLLLLLP!

I think you are referring to the seeve.exe pop up, correct? Hijackthis may be able to assist you (I have never used it, but I keep seeing it as a viable solution on most of the forums I am seeing. Apparently, it is also a German word, because I am getting more hits in German on search engines than English. If you are on XP, you may also want to do a system restore back to one of the restore points before this was happening.

If you are using any P2P service, stop.

That is the best info I can find right now.

This link has a couple of variations on how to use hijackthis. here is a link to the download (apparently it is free).

I will warn you, this program isnt really for the less computer savvy crowd. Im not saying you cant use it, but I would suggest running any anti-spyware and anti virus before doing this, just in case the people at the forums did not run their anti spyware software correctly when they claimed it would not remove it. If you are not that well versed in editing your registry, this may not be for you. But if you know someone that can help you, or you are confident enough to be able to follow the instructions, jump right in. Be sure you have made a back up of your important stuff, just in case.

Try adaware or spybot. I think they are free. Also I think yahoo has some antispyware. If you use yahoo messnger and installed their yahoo bar into your explorer, they may even have a little thing next to their pop up blocker that says antispyware like mine does. Good luck hun.

Just in case you're not already feeling buried in suggestions, here's three more,
mainly to implement after you get rid of your pop-up problem.

1. switch from IE to Mozilla Firefox.
2. get Microsoft Antispyware Beta 1, mainly to run in the background to keep spyware out. Do a system scan with it every week or two.
3. get Spyware Blaster.

(all the above stuff is free and very good).

good luck

Try adaware or spybot

kurchatovium, one of the forums I read has a post from a user stating that Spybot wouldnt delete it. I use Spybot, and love it (I have only had on thing it wouldnt remove, which was Wild Tangents; other than that it has been awesome). Make sure your system can handle it: anything less than 512 RAM and Spybot will shut your computer down.

How good is that Microsoft Antispyware, out of curiosity? Anything with "Microsoft" and "beta" in the name makes me extremely nervous, but this isnt the first place I have seen it recommended.

Glad you asked dajerx, 'cause your question made me take another look at my copy of SpywareBlaster and reminded me to update its database. To do that I had to download the latest version (3.3) so all is now cool.

I've been running SpywareBlaster for a year now, and I know it's good because I always come up clean when scanning with Spybot.

This makes it difficult to evaluate MS Antisypware (which I've been running for 3 months) because it is one of two levels of protection on my system.

I do like the MS program for its updates (it asks everyday if you want it to check) and it always comes back with new stuff to put into the database. This tells me MS is very proactive in keeping the database current with the latest spyware signatures. I like that. (50,000 sigs in the database).
It also has good statistics available on its activities.

I would recommend both programs equally.
I also recommend running both on your system as I've been doing with nary a problem and no noticable slowdown.

Ok...

First of all... Thanks guys.

I did do some research before asking for help, and I did see that Hijackthis stuff... True to what you said, I have absolutely no idea what any of the stuff in my registry means.

So... I tried system restore like you said, and it has worked thus far. I'm running all my Ad-aware, spybot search, and cleansweeper as I write.

Hopefully this will heal my old computer. (crosses fingers)

Thanks guys!
Sunny

Much Appreciated!

Update

I did system restore. Updated my Windows XP.

Updated my Firewall, all my virus checkers, ad-aware, spybot search and destroy...

Then I ran everything to catch all the bugs.

Things seem to be ok now.

Thank you once again for all of your help!

Sunny

Dont sweat it...

I officially get my degree in computer networking on the 14th of May; glad to see I can put the knowledge to work LOL!!
