Sorry about your Braves, Mitch 🙁 It was a valiant effort.... defeat in 18 innings is tough to swallow

Thank you, my friend. We are buds, so I know you mean this sincerely. I think what is most infuriating is that the bums had a five run lead with 2 innings left, and then the bullpen screwed things up so badly. Kyle Farnsworth gave up the worst Braves home run since Mark Wohlers served it up to Jim Leyrtiz in the 1996 World Series Game 4, to tie a game 6-6 that Atlanta once led 6-0. After the tie, until the game winning homerun, the usually awful Atlanta bullpen pitched valiantly, but the offense just couldnt come through. Iam suffering from baseball withdrawal now, as I cant believe our season is over. We've had plenty of playoff nightmares during the 14 years, but this has to rank up there as one of the worst. Alas, in a few days, the winter mentality will set in for me, and I will look forward to coming back next year. Somehow, I have a feeling they will still be pretty exciting to watch in 2006.

Thanks, my friend 🙂 As a Leaf fan, I know how tough it is to cheer on your favorite team year after year... only to see it end too soon. My Leafs haven't won a championship since the final pre-expansion year in 1967... and counting 🙁

I didn't really care who won the Houston-Atlanta series (I'm not a fan of either team, and I was rooting for the Astros only because the Braves had already won a championship), but I can see it was why a tough loss for Atlanta fans, especially the way the game played out (as classic as it was). Just remember there's always next year, Mitch, and there's a lot of teams that haven't won the World Series yet, or face a drought, like the Cubs (we'll see what happens with the Astros, Cards, and White Sox). Glad to see you supporting your club, and I know what you're going through, since I'm a Lakers fan and last year sucked for them. 😀

Amk, I always support my Braves. I have been a Braves fan since 1983, including from 1985 to 1990 when they sucked. Yes, the playoff losses are at times infuriating, and this one ranks up there as one of the worst. I think I will always be a Braves fan. I believe they will be in there next year. Their pitching is still pretty good, but they need a bat or two, and some better relief pitching.
As for the Lakers, I think you guys will benefit from having Phil back this year. Iam sort of an NBA fan, but not as crazy as Iam over the Braves. Several pre season magazines have the Lakers picked to finish 10th in the conference, and out of the playoffs, and while I know the Western Conference can be brutal with teams like San Antonio, with the three titles in six years, and Sacramento. My feeling is, that the Lakers are good enough, between what they have, and the proven winner Phil, to get to the playoffs. Remember,. Jackson got the Bulls to the playoffs the year that Jordan was retired, and then did it again in 1995 in spite of Jordan not coming back til late that season. Yes, the Western Conference in 2005-06 will be tougher than the East of the 90s, whose only viable threat to the Bulls then were the Knicks, who were hardly imposing. I say that I think the Lakers will make the playoffs, and have a win total in the 40s. Maybe I'm crazy, but I think Phil will find a way. Good Luck to you this year,Amk, and to Leaf in hockey. As for me, Iam dormant now with sports until spring 2006, except to keep track of baseball off season deals.

Thanks for the kind words, Mitch. The main goal for the Lakers next season is to at least make the playoffs, and any round they win will be a bonus. It all depends on how well Kobe, Phil, and the rest of the team work together. And being a Braves fan can be hard but imagine if you were an Atlanta Hawks (NBA) fan, now that would suck. 😀

aww sorry Mitchell i know how much it meant to you. so i wont say how much i sort of dislike the braves. i was a loyal cubbie fan for years ever since 97 or 98 when sammy and that mac guire person were having the homerun contest. i remember thinking how much fun sammy seemed to have while playing. so i started watching the cubs and loved them no matter how much they lost. so i feel your pain. maybe there will be next year. and i wanted the redsox

Amk, actually, I used to follow the Hawks. I was never as much into them as Iam the Braves, and have virtually stopped caring about them since 1999, the last time they were in the playoffs.
That was a weird year. It was the year I moved here. I always told myself that I would be crazy if there were ever Atlanta NY playoff series, because I lived in NY for my whole life til moving here, and always went crazy when Atlanta- NY played, even in the regular season. That year, when I moved here there were THREE Atlanta-NY playoff series. First, in May, the week I moved, the Hawks were eliminated in 4 straight games by the Knicks in the Eastern Semi Finals. Then, in October, I had my ultimate NLCS as my beloved Braves took out the hated Mets in six. Finally, I had to suffer through a World Series sweep of four straight at the hands of the hated Yankees. I almost felt like the man upstairs was sending me a message about having moved from NY.
Ann, I do feel pretty badly today. I'll get over it in a few days as I do every off season.
Yes, Orange, my good friend, I hope the Cards kick Houston's sorry ass in the NLCS. This year, I hope your Cards go all the way.
Milagros, thanks my friend. Sorry your Dodgers didnt do too well this year. I've been there, pal, I loved the Braves in the 80s when they were in last place before they started this great run. Hopefully next year , the Dodgers can get back to the playoffs.

Isabeau, my very good friend, as you may have heard, the Yankees did in fact lose to the Angels last night, 5-3. I was thrilled about that. For some reason, with the Braves this year, maybe because of the 18 innings, and what they put me through on Sunday, Iam still feeling lousy about their loss even this morning. Usually, I tend to start feeling better after 24 hours, but this year, it's taking a bit longer. In reality, I predicted Houston was going to beat them before the series started, because as I said, this is no wild card team. They are loaded. I hope the Cards beat Houston's ass good, but orange, and all other Cards fans on the board, as you know from last year, Houston is one hell of a tough team. It should be a great NLCS. Good Luck to the Cards. As for me, I'll be okay. I've been through this 13 other times with the Braves in 14 years since 1991, and I'll get through this too. After all, they will be back, and should still be pretty good in 2006, because their core group of players should remain in tact.

As a Mets fan I do understand your pain. Your team has administered it to us a lot over the last 10 years. I wish I could say that I was happy that your team was eliminated but I am not happy. I do like a lot of your players such as Chipper, Andruw, Smoltz,and others. But Farnsworth was screwed twice in the 8th inning by umpire calls. He should have been out of the inning and in the dugout. It is unfair to condemn Kyle Farnsworth when the replays showed at second and first that the runners were out. Especially the one at first. Eric Cooper blew that call big time. I have seen that replay about 20 times and each time I see it he was out. When I saw it live the first time I thought he was out. Don't blame Farnsworth. Blame Eric Cooper for a horrible call that cost the Braves a shot at going to a game 5. That call is made properly then he faces Berkman in the 9th inning with either one out or no outs and a man on. A very different scenerio than the bases loaded. Think about that as you start your off-season. In the meantime, Mets will be better in '06 and beyond so I look forward to chatting it up with you as I expect this to be the Braves and Mets division for the next 15 years. That will be fun. Baseball team from Anaheim (NOT L.A. 😛). They were called the California Angels a while back, and had some playoff disappointments over the years (like losing to the Red Sox) and some great players (Nolan Ryan is one). In 2002 the Halos finally won a championship (over Barry Bonds and the Giants). Lost to Boston again last year 🙁 but beat Yankees this year 😀 and will face White Sox next.

My next comment is not directed at anyone to be taunting, because I realize that we probably do have some Yankee fans on this board, but I also know from the climate in the room last night, that many of us, especially Red Sox fans, were happy the Yankees lost.
All I can say is, had the comments directed at me on the Yankees board been here, the mods would have had a field day editing some of them. On Sunday night, after the Braves defeat, I would say a minimum of 10 Yankees fans on AOL came over to the Braves board on AOL, and started writing the nastiest comments directed at our team and our fans. They were rude, classless, and annoying. So, last night, after the Yankees lost, I returned the favor, directing my taunting ONLY at the Yankees, their insane 200 million dollar payroll, and the classless fans of theirs who were trolling the Braves board on Sunday night. I made NO personal comments directed at any specific fans, even though there were at least five of them I would have liked to have sailed into, with comments that probably would have gotten me at least a temporary ban, anyway, had I posted such comments on this board. I held my tounge at those fans, only to find this morning when I inpsected the Yankees board again, that I had been called some of the worst names imaginable, including s'it stain, cum stain. (Nice spelling on someone's part, good to see they know how to spell) Jerk off, moron, and a whole host of other rude comments. It amazed me just how rude and classless these people were, especially since the EXACT same posters who bashed me on the Yankees board were the people who had come over to the Braves board not 24 hours earlier to gloat at our team's heartbreak. While I know we on this board have our differences, even if we like or love each other, Iam pleased to say that everyone has been most supportive to me the last 48 hours with this loss the Braves had, and that I appreciate it. To be honest, while I know many of us in the chat had our fun watching the Yankees go down last night, and while I admit I dislike Steinbrenner, and his insane payroll, I genuinely like Joe Torre, and think he is a good guy, and that the Yankees have some good classy players. My fuel for the feelings I had last night was just to shut the mouths of the idiot Yankee fans who bashed the Braves on our message board on Sunday and Monday. It would be nice if they could accept their team's loss with class, as we Braves fans did. We absorbed our heartbreak, and will move on. People like that irritate me to no end, and the personal attacks were uncalled for. Oh, well, I guess it just shows the mentaility of some people.
Anyhow, end of rant. I just wanted to give the forum an idea of some of the things I've been seeing in the last 24 hours.

Sorry to hear about your troubles Mitch. I believe the majority of fans have class but there are always a few who make the rest of us look like assholes. And it's easy to post negative shit when no one knows who you are. It's all right to hate other teams but people should at least give them some respect when they win. When the Pistons beat the Lakers last year, I said the Pistons are a great team and deserved to win, even though I'll always be a Lakers fan. And I'm honest when I say the Yankees made it a good series with the Angels. I'm glad they lost but if they had won I would have congratulated them. As with everything else, some people carry the sports thing a little too far. Try not to sink to their level, and remember that words can never hurt you, at least not physically. 🙂

I agree with what you said, and thank you, Amk. I do in fact give the Yankees respect for winning 4 championships in five years from 1996 to 2000. I will admit that I was devestated in 1996, because I really felt Atlanta should have won that World Series, after beating the Yankees badly in the first two games in the Bronx. When the Yankees beat the Braves again in the 1999 World Series , I was very stoic, and felt the Yankees deserved to win that year, because they were the reigning champions, and the better team. I took it like a man, congratulated the Yankee fans I knew, and moved on, not engaging in a war of words, or sinking to idiotic levels, like the posters on the baseball boards on AOL the last few days have with me about the Braves. Show some character, and some class, people, geez. I know we cant teach some people to have class, character, civility, or sportsmanship, but it would be nice.
