The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States.

According to this website, there are 3,446 total recipients of this honor, 91 are still alive, and only 19 have won it twice.

Recently, 100-year-old Lt. John W. Finn passed away, the oldest living recipient of the CMH. What he did to receive the highest award in the military will honorable men will risk their lives and die gallantly than surrender...

During the first attack by Japanese airplanes on the Naval Air Station, Kaneohe Bay, on 7 December 1941, Lt. Finn promptly secured and manned a .50-caliber machinegun mounted on an instruction stand in a completely exposed section of the parking ramp, which was under heavy enemy machinegun strafing fire. Although painfully wounded many times, he continued to man this gun and to return the enemy's fire vigorously and with telling effect throughout the enemy strafing and bombing attacks and with complete disregard for his own personal safety. It was only by specific orders that he was persuaded to leave his post to seek medical attention. Following first aid treatment, although obviously suffering much pain and moving with great difficulty, he returned to the squadron area and actively supervised the rearming of returning planes.

Remember these heroes this weekend...

Honor the fallen, the brave, and the selfless.

Sam,

Thanks for the reminder, but you, along with almost everyone, mistakenly called it called the Congressional Medal of Honor. The actual title is the Medal of Honor.

wikipedia said:
As the award citation includes the phrase "in the name of Congress", it is sometimes erroneously called the Congressional Medal of Honor, however the official title is the Medal of Honor.
