The people have spoken, and this time, since it's a private event, there's no one to cry to.

Why would she want to go to a prom with those backwards-ass people? Yeah, they may have spoken in that idiotic town but rest assured, they certainly don't speak for a majority of America (thank God). Now they can go back to having babies with their first cousins in peace.

Constance certainly will do well on her own without them and from the outpouring of support she is now getting worldwide, she's gonna be just fine. 😀

On the other hand, it's equally annoying when officials and everyday citizens seem to love bothering people about their personal business.

All of this mess could have simply been avoided by letting two lesbians be themselves.

True, but in the philosophy of American traditionalism, that perspective of sexuality is one of the values that was integral to America's successful climb to the status of superpower. They think of it as sort of a by-proxy reward by a nepotistic god for obedience and resistance to evil.

Needless to say I don't ENDORSE that point-of-view...but if you were curious as to why its still around, I figured I'd list it.

There comes a point when the rules become painfully outdated. Generally speaking, it's more rational to amend said rules rather than risk the possibility of drawing a lot of negative publicity to your school.

I'd say it's a reasonable assumption to believe that most Americans prefer not to bother others about their sexuality. Most younger people in particular are more open-minded about sexuality.

Granted, you may have a point here. Older people, especially in rural areas, tend to be less accepting of homosexuals. Also, religious fundamentalists tend not to be accepting either.

As cynical as I am though, I try to at least give Americans the credit of not being mostly ignorant homophobes, although I will concede that I may be wrong.

Meanwhile she's gotten support from all over the country, a $30,000 scholarship (!), and what's looking to be an amazing private prom at a fabulous place in New Orleans that neither she nor any of the rest of her peers will ever forget

I haven't been keeping up with this story but it looks like she'll be just fine. She did her part and whether her town likes it or not, they've been put on international blast. I hope this opens the door for realistic change in that town, but hope springs eternal huh???

No, this is just the one that made it's way to the news. Small town America has been going through this for years. I can't answer your question with any certainty since I really don't know the relevance of one's looks being important in this case. A win for them is a win for the gay community. I agree with you wholeheartedly Kis, but I also know what Scruff is talking about: pretty=press coverage. A similar point has been made about how many women and children of color go missing in this country every year, but you rarely see a big deal made of it; meanwhile it seems like if a white woman or child goes missing the entire nation goes on red-alert immediately. It's sad but I can't say it's not true. In this case, the good news is as you said: their win will be a win for everyone, including the chubby butches and the male tomboys 🙂

Oh, he makes a very valid point which is why I chose not to address it corporately but personally. When he made his statement, the first thing that popped in my mind was "if this were a black girl would this had even gotten media attention?" But since that wasn't the subject matter of the OP I chose to stay on point and not make a race statement. I'm sure that there are a few on this board who greatly appreciate it too!

Eh, I'm sure a few do squirm when race is brought into a subject like this, it's an uncomfortable subject; still, I think it is on point and relevant when we start talking about image and what the media chooses to focus on, which has been a significant element of this case.

The good news for me is that I'm not the one who started the dialogue in that direction. It has a tendency to implode otherwise well discussed threads. I don't know why that is nor do I care to contemplate on it either.

I'm glad that there is some solution to this issue even though the school's cancelling the prom should've been dealt with. I'm just not sure how you go about doing it other than having two proms elsewhere I guess.

Hey, you feel how you feel and I feel how I feel.

Let me ask you this. Are you personally affected by Constance? Why does what happened to her seem to make you so upset? Actually, most people I know are for equal rights, and that includes gay people having the same (not more but the same) rights as everyone else. Perhaps not in that obviously backwards town but for the most part everywhere else seems to support Constance being able to go to her prom except for a few angry folks, at least from what I'm seeing. I guess I'm just one of those people that think that everyone should be treated equal. You know, our country was founded on that principle and all.

It's sort of sad that something as trivial as this (the right of homophobes to freely assemble as long as they don't use public money to do it) apparently gives you such satisfaction. But simple pleasures are the best, and all that.

So, Constance has learned who her friends are, and that Mississippi homophobes have their intellectual limitations. You've learned about the whole public vs. private thing, and that knowledge will stand you in good stead going forward. And we've all learned a bit about you.
