I dunno why the UFC fans on this forum stopped doing this. Oh well. Here's my analysis for tonight's card: UFC 74: Respect.
Clay Guida vs. Marcus Aurelio
Guida's already 1-2 in the Octagon. Aurelio has had pretty solid success on the international level. While the first time in the Octagon can be intimidating, Aurelio should overcome.
MY CALL: Aurelio by submission
Frank Mir vs. Antoni Hardonk
Mir has slowed down A LOT since the accident and his game is suffering as a result. He's not the same fighter any more. Despite his record Hardonk has some skill. As much as I hate to say it, this one should be another Mir/Christison fight.
MY CALL: Mir by Decision
David Heath vs. Renato 'Babalu' Sobral
It was a total shock that Sobral lost to Lambert earlier this year. Sobral is a world-class fighter and championship material who's just caught some bad breaks. Should be no contest.
MY CALL: Sobral by Submission
Ryan Jensen vs. Thales Leites
Another classic striker/grappler match up. If it stays standing up, Jensen should win it. If it goes down, Leites should win. The deciding factor will be experience. Jensen's new to the UFC. Leites is not.
MY CALL: Leites by Submission
Patrick Cote vs. Kendall Grove
I like Patrick Cote. I really do. But he lacks one key thing to make him a success: a killer instinct. He never goes in to finish a fight the way some big names do. Grove has a reach advantage, is more versatile and can finish a fight when he needs to.
MY CALL: Grove by TKO
Kurt Pelligrino vs. Joe Stevenson
As skilled as Pelligrino is, Stevenson is just a bulldozer. I figure this fight and maybe two more before Stevenson gets a crack at the title.
MY CALL: Stevenson by Submission
Roger Huerta vs. Alberto Crane
Stevenson may have a few more fights before the title shot, but this one should put Huerta at the front of the line. He's a devastating striker who can go the distance and handle himself on the ground too. Crane is making his debut which won't help him either.
MY CALL: Huerta by KO/TKO
Josh Koschek vs. Georges St. Pierre
I take nothing away from Koschek. He's a great wrestler and he's improved a lot since he started. Two things work against him in this fight however. 1) he's WAY too over confident in his own skill, specifically his standup. 2) he's a good wrestler, but he's not the best in the UFC. GSP has fought better wrestlers with more MMA experience (Trigg, Hughes, Sherk), beat them all down and not only that, he made it look easy. A mental mistake from GSP is pretty much Koschek's only hope.
MY CALL: St. Pierre by TKO
Randy Couture vs. Gabriel Gonzaga
This is such a hard fight to call. On one hand, Gonzaga is a monster. He's got solid standup, better ground skills, a sick submission game, is very aggressive and has all the momentum in the world by doing what nobody expected of him by knocking Mirko CroCop out. Now, that being said, Randy Couture has the advantage of being RANDY COUTURE. He's made a career of taking monsters, knock-out artists and submission specialists and sending them packing.
I think the longer the fight goes on, the better Couture's chances are. If it ends early, it's because Gonzaga hit another brilliant maneuver. The longer it goes on, the ore Couture can wear Gonzaga down and frustrate him into making a mistake.
MY CALL: Gonzaga by TKO (but in my heart, I'll be cheering for Couture 😉 )
