We all know musicians and bands are inspired by others and 'pay respect' to them by doing covers of their songs.

But we all know sometimes they aren't good.

I was at the 'Bite of Las Vegas' on Saturday and somewhere between 7-8 p.m. 'Puddle of Mudd' takes the stage and while playing their own decent songs they mixed in two AWFUL covers...

of Black Sabbaths 'War Pigs' and of AC/DC's 'TNT'.:yowzer:

Now, with all due respect to POM: who are they to cover two of the GREATEST bands of all time?:disgust:

Their attempted covers were decent at best and uninspiring, but seriously, of ALL songs to cover you cover Black Sabbath and AC/DC?!:xlime:

Why not just butcher a Beatles and Guns and Roses song while you're at it?!:ignite:

How say you? Do you like covers? Which ones? Should some bands NOT cover other bands that are 'out of their range'? Does it bother you when someone does a cover---espescially when it's bad (or a blatant rip-off)?

Oh, and in case you can't tell, I usually don't like most covers/remixes, etc.
:punt:

It doesn't bother me if some band decides to cover another artists' material. Even if it's bad, they're just trying to pay tribute in their own way. Covers that stand out as being very good, for me, include Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt", Lacuna Coil's spin on "Enjoy the Silence" and Shinedown's take on "Simple Man". I know there are plenty I'm missing, but I'll let others chime in on that.

Guns N' Roses covers of McCartneys "Live and Let Die" and Dylan's "Knockin' on Heavens Door" are both better than the originals in my opinion. Just to show I'm not a total GNR shill, I will even say I liked the Wallflowers cover of Bowies "Heroes" a little better than the original.

I half to disagree about the covers of Live and Let Die and Knockin on Heavens Door my friend. But then again Guns N' Roses was never my cup of tea.To each his own says i.🙂

Some bands do great covers. Disturbed's remake of Land of Confusion was fantastic and Korn's remake of Brick in the Wall 1,2&3 was phenominal. Some however just suck ass. The aforementioned GnR covers spring to mind (sorry, I thought they were terrible).

My like or dislike of a cover is formed based on how it sounds. I feel Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock should be shot for their butchering of Behind Blue Eyes and Feel Like Making Love, respectively. Some bands can pull it off and others let their so-called "artistic creativity" mangle a classic.

How about Everlast's cover of Folsom Prison Blues?Far cry from the original but I'm feeling it....

Faith No More's cover of "Easy" is a excellent, as are NIN covers of Adam Ant's "Physical" and Joy Divisions "Dead Souls". A great song is a great song.

Metallica's Garage Inc is an example of brilliant covering.

Now, I know I know, not Metallica again!!!! But in all honesty, that CD2 with 'Helpless', 'Stone Cold Crazy', 'The Small Hours' etc just shows how passionate a band can be with not wanting to just create their own music, but play other people's music to perfection.

CD1 is not Metallica's finest hour, however, the covers are still good.

Anyone wanna hear a really really good cover? Listen to 'A Perfect Circle' 's cover of 'Imagine' by John Lennon. Think of the positive messages Lennon tried to get across like...imagine what we can achieve as a world community or whatever. Then listen to this new cover of it, and how Maynard has completely flipped it on its head. Same song, but pessemistic. Like saying, "Well, imagine what we could achieve, and look at how Lennon dreamed the world to be, and we still managed to fuck it all up." Kinda cynical.

Honourable mentions for sure:

Trivium's cover of 'Master of Puppets' by Metallica

Machinehead's cover of 'Halo be Thy Name' by Maiden

Disturbed's cover of 'Land of Confusion' by Phil Colins

Kill Switch Engage's cover of 'Holy Diver' by Dio

Stone Sour's cover of 'Wicked Game' by Chris Issak

System of A Down's cover of 'Damnit' by Blink182

Richard Cheese's Cover of 'Down with the Sickness' by Disturbed

I agree with ya, raw at its best 🙂

For me, I don't like a lot of covers if they can't do it better than the original then leave it well alone, however, this one, friggin' nails it for me but even better when its played live and your there in the audience feeling the power of it :firedevil.

Metallica - Whiskey in the jar :mhorns:

The greatest cover version of 'em all, in my crumbled opinion, has got to be when The Jimi Hendrix Experience transformed this:

Bob Dylan - "All Along The Watchtower" (1968)

Into this:

Good call on a lot of those, but I much prefer Cradle of Filth's cover of "Hallowed Be Thy Name" to Machinehead's.

A cover that surprised me was Fall Out Boy's rendition of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart". I've never heard a Fall Out Boy song I like, but they did a very respectable job with the cover.

There are TONS of covers out there, and many of them are pure shit. I could write a book about how much I hate jam bands because they are over glorified cover bands.

However -

(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding - Best performed by Elvis Costello and The Attractions, but written by Nick Lowe and originally performed by Brinsley Schwarz

Black Diamond - The Replacements garaging the shit out of this KISS gem.

Down Home Girl - Written by Jerry Butler and Artie Butler, this song was covered by The Rolling Stones, and more recently, a real kicking version by Nic Armstrong and the Thieves

Splendid Isolation - Originally done by the incomparable Warren Zevon, but recently covered really well by Pete Yorn.

That's All - Keane did a pretty rad version of this (shudder) Genesis song at the VH1 Rock Honors in '07.

I dunno, there are other great covers out there.

This is another cover that doesn't live up to the original but it's still worth mentioning.Staind did a great job on Tool's ''Sober'' but should have left songs like Alice in Chains ''Nutshell'' and Pearl Jam's ''Black'' alone.
