My mom and I decided to take a break today from the routine of sickness and doctors, and paid a visit to Delaware Park casino in Wilmington. We hadn't been there for six months, and, before last summer when we had gone there, I hadn't been to a regular casino with table games in almost ten years. I go.. a couple of times a year, to the off track betting place, and bet a limited amount of money, so I'm hardly a heavy gambler.

In the past, when I've played craps in Atlantic City, and Paradise Island, the tables were very loud, with players screaming for the winning numbers to be made, and moaning and groaning if craps was rolled.

Today, the table I started at was extremely cold. When I tried to start talking to the dice, and root for the numbers, the players looked at me like I was nuts. I started saying to them: "Haven't any of you guys ever been to Atlantic City or the islands? In those places, people scream at the dice all the time, and it's accepted.". These people didn't seem to get it. The table didn't improve.. so.. instead of blowing all my money at the stupid crap table.. I decided to go to a place where the money lasts MUCH longer, the horses. There, as anyone who plays horses knows, one can bet.. 2, 4, 6 dollars a race, so a hundred bucks can last you a whole afternoon. While I didn't end up winning at the casino for the day as a whole, and ended up down a little bit, the horses were much better than the craps tables. I just for the life of me don't understand why craps players in other casinos shout at the dice, and these people sat there like zombies. Anyhow.

Has anyone else ever encountered rude or asshole players in casinos?

Mitch

Bah those people don't know how to play craps right. if your not at a table where people are loud, screaming numbers, or getting all excited then you know they are not having a good time and the table is probably cold as ice. Its common for that kind of commotion at Vegas tables they do crazy stuff all the time. its all in the name of fun.

I don't do craps living in Vegas. Prefer roulette, and yelling at the dealer. It's fun, and I meet more down to Earth people their.

Lol I love to play roulette too, it just eats my money faster especially when i see 6 Reds come up and i place my money on Black and that DAMN GREEN 00 Pops up

Oh, Mitchell! I told you NOT to go to the table where they were having the bible study! 😀

Thanks for the replies.

dark, I haven't been to Vegas since before I was 21, so I've never played there, but, as I said in my opening post, even in Atlantic City, and Paradise Island, people yell at the dice.

I remember once when I was in Paradise Island, I was shooting the dice at a very hot table. The point was eight, and we all had the "Hard Ways" bets. Everyone was shouting "Come on, Forty Four, Baabbby!!". Sure enough, I shot the hard eight, and the whole table screamed and exploded, and was like FORRTTYYY FOURRRRR! Everyone was jumping up and down.

I still consider Delaware Park to not really be a full service casino. They have exactly two craps tables, a few blackjack and roulette tables, etc. The real full service casinos are in Vegas and Atlantic City, the Delaware ones are almost like wannabees.

I've played roulette, but, I'm really not into it. Blackjack is just okay, so is slots.. to me.. just okay. The real excitement to me is horses and craps, because it is so fast. Yesterday, for example, I bet on one horse race that I thought for sure I had won. I was already counting the money I thought I was going to win, lol, when some guy behind me goes "That other horse is going to edge it out for a photo finish" . Sure enough, the damn horse order, instead of coming in the trifecta I needed, came first, second, and then fourth.

Many I've talked to say not to gamble is the best formula. If one gambles, it can get too frustrating, lol.

Mitch

LOL, Knox. Bible Study! I like that!!!

I had to use vegas because i never been to the east coast, so it was the only place i could reference.

East coast is egalatarianism at it's worse. Confrontational culturism at it's worse, enjoy!

As someone who plays craps extensively in Vegas, I can tell you that, in general, you answered your own question there. Cold tables are generally quiet, because people have often lost quite a bit of their bankroll in a short amount of time. Your "shouting at the dice" probably rubbed them the wrong way because they were already bummed out. Craps, as a general rule, has a much larger list of unwritten rules than other games, and it takes longer to get the etiquette down pat.

In general though, a hotter table is going to be louder, and a cold one will be quieter. As for rude people in a casino, yeah, probably every day I am in one. Rudeness is prevalent in that environment.

Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your insight. I see what you're saying about how my shouting at the dice rubbed the players the wrong way, because of them being bummed out. I wasn't trying to piss people off, of course. I was just trying to "rally the table".

I can tell you this: As someone who bets horses even more than he plays craps, anyone I've seen who watches horse racing, will scream at the horses no matter how poorly they are doing. At both the off track betting place, and casino, people will scream at whatever race they have bet, and will cheer if they win, and curse if they lose.

Eh. I wont have to worry about the craps players at Delaware Park for a while, because I wont be going back there anytime soon.

Mitch

I don't gamble, and I've never played Craps, but I can tell you
that I most certainly would not be yelling at the dice. Just because
someone plays differently than you, doesn't make them assholes.
They were having a quiet game, and you came along and started
yelling, so they probably thought you were the asshole. Just sayin.

Brighteyes, I consider your post a put down, for this reason.

You admitted you never played craps.. I've been playing for.. 23 years, since I was 18 years old. At EVERY casino I've ever been to, multitudes, in Atlantic City, and Paradise Island, people ALWAYS yell at the dice, whether the table is hot, or cold. At those casinos, if one of the players I was playing with on Friday, said "Dont yell at the dice", the reply, probably would have been, "Mind your own" or.. "Shut the F up".

Had it been a reverse situation on Friday, and they had been yelling at the dice, and I was being quiet, I wouldn't have said anything. I would have understood that this is how the game is played.

In no way was I "being an asshole" for wanting the dice to roll good numbers, so everyone at the table would win. I would have been more of an asshole, if they wanted good numbers to come up, and I was betting "Dont Pass", or wanted the seven to come up, so everyone would crap out, and I was yelling "Seven, Crap Out".

Bright, next time, before you make statements, that people thought "I was the Asshole", you should visit a few casinos, and see how the game is played, so you are informed before you just start speaking off the top of your head. You wanted to make your point of "Mitch is an asshole", which you deemed to be more important, than actually knowing what you were talking about, from experience with the game, like I have.

The reason I stay with roulette, and at least the dealer is compensated by the house(employer), and myself(tips). Especially, since I'm yelling at then most of the time. And, in good fun. 🙂 I always expect to lose some money when I play.

nv, I appreciate that. I've only played roulette a few times.

I know that realistically, one has to expect to lose money when they play. Someone I used to know said :"They dont build billion dollar casinos for people to win money".

As for compensating the dealer, I always do. When I bet the hard ways at craps, I'll usually put $5 on each hard way I bet, and $1 for the craps game men or women, usually four people running the game, so, if the hard way were to win, I would win either $35 for a 7 to 1 hard way, or $45 for a 9 to 1 hard way, and the dealers win either $7 or $9 to split. If I'm playing blackjack, which I dont do that often anymore, I will often give the dealer $1 for each winning hand, unless I'm really losing.

I was mildly pissed when I lost on Friday, but that didn't surprise me. What really pissed me off, as I said before, was the attitudes of the players.

Based on your description of what happened, I don't really understand how those people were assholes. You say they looked at you like you were nuts, but it doesn't sound like they were insulting you or doing anything to intentionally make you feel uncomfortable. It sounds to me like you were just involved in a game with a few individuals who don't play the way you do, even if it is common everywhere else you go, and got self conscious.

I don't think it's very polite to tell people to get educated on the subject before they reply. It is very possible that those people thought negatively of you, just as you are thinking of them. That's a deduction anyone can make given the information you've provided. If you only want to hear from people who know the typical dynamic of the game, consider posting your question on a gambling forum. Here, you're going to likely get input from a variety of people with a variety of levels of familiarity with gambling and specifically this particular game. It doesn't make their opinions or observations invalid or personal attacks.

I'd agree with this, except for the absolutes. At Saratoga, most people do get loud, one way or the other. At OTB around here, you only get volume for the big races.

There's nothing like being at the rail at Saratoga! 165 days to go!

Hi Morph,

I've never been to Saratoga, but my parents were when I was younger.

Sometimes at the OTB here, people do get loud. I go there a couple of times a year, and know some guys who are regulars. This one guy Paul, who happens to look like former PA Senator Arlen Specter, will shout and sometimes curse at the TV, if his horses dont come in. He's there at least 2-3 times a week, from what I hear, and he's a fun guy.

Skip, I know I sent you a pm, but I have one public comment to make about your post.

So.. it's not polite of me to tell the person I did to get educated on the subject.. but it's okay of her to tell me that "Maybe the other people thought I was an asshole". She can imply that others think I'm an asshole, without knowing the facts, but I can't respond, and tell her, who admits she knows nothing about gambling.. to get educated, before taking the other people's sides. Sounds a bit hypocritical, wouldn;t you say?

Mitch

It is true that most people at the craps tables I've ever played at do yell encouragement at the dice. The only exceptions, in my experience, are the people who play "Don't Pass" or "Don't Come." They tend to be quiet, since their bets are opposed to the majority of other players at the table.

But I rarely play craps, since all bets (except behind the line after you have made a bet on the line) have a negative expectation. When I do go to Atlantic City, I will only play craps with some of the profits, if any, from poker.

Today, the table I started at was extremely cold. When I tried to start talking to the dice, and root for the numbers, the players looked at me like I was nuts. These people didn't seem to get it. The table didn't improve.. so.. instead of blowing all my money at the stupid crap table..

Were they actually rude to you? Did they insult you for wanting to yell at the dice? Or did all they do was look at you strangely?

I've been in casinos. Every casino will be different and how people play the games are different. Just because that was a quiet table didn't make them rude. It is very possible that to them you were the one who was rude.

I mean, if I'm sitting at a table that was cold, everyone's quiet, and along comes some guy who starts talking and yelling at his dice, I'm going to think that he's nuts too.

If you hadn't referred to the people in your game as assholes, I would think that Amanda would have been out of line to use that kind of language. But since you opened that door, I see her use of the word as simply a way of saying, "They might feel the same way about you." If you were offended by her suggestion that someone somewhere may think you're an asshole, perhaps you shouldn't have used such harsh language to describe these strangers who really seem to have not done anything to you, outside of play a game differently than you're used to.

Telling anyone to get educated before they reply to a topic you posted soliciting experiences and opinions is condescending and rude. As I said before, if you only want to hear the opinions of those who are familiar with the game, perhaps this wasn't the best place to post it. However, if you're open to responses from anyone, regardless of their familiarity with gambling or craps, and you were just sniping at Amanda because you don't like her, well then this is the perfect place for you to post your thread 🙂 Perhaps only that one post was...a little misguided.

Nemesis, to answer your questions: The table was not particularly cold before I got there. Also, yes, they were specifically rude to me for talking to the dice. They were saying things like: "Why don't you be quiet and play the game. Why are you yelling at the dice?" And.. "Don't yell, or you'll jinx the dice". In 23 years of playing, I'd never heard that.

mils, thank you. This has been my experience too. Most craps tables I've been to, are very loud. Not these people. It was one of the only crap tables I've been to, where people were being quiet. Also, to clarify, I was not betting Dont Pass. I was betting the Pass Line the whole time I was at that table, so it wasn't like I was openly betting against the people at the table.. or rooting for the dice to go against what others at the table needed for everyone to win money.

Skip, you're entitled to your opinion. I've already told you I disagree, and my opinion won't change either, about what I did, or Amanda's reply.

Mitch

Are you saying you didn't post the facts in your OP?
